The Enid Blyton Society

Are all editions of these books firsts? None of them seem to have a date in them or mentions of what impression they are and I'm trying to catalogue them for my records. How can I tell what edition or impression they are?

You need a set of Tony's bibliographies, they explain in detail exactly which books are the 1st editions and why. Anyone who collects needs a set of these. I consider them the most valuable items in my collection.

Generally, first editions (Gifford editions) will have plain boards (various coloured 'cloth' with gold vignettes) and originally had a dust jacket. 'glazed' picture-boards were later editions, although they also had dust wrappers. Not sure if they were all reprinted - I have a Foxglove Story Book from 1960, which is obviously a reprint, so presumably they all were reprinted at some point..

Does your Foxglove book say 1960 in it? Mine hasn't got any date, none of them have. Their all Gifford editions, the first five have the coloured 'cloth' boards and the last three pictorial boards. Daffodil, Poppy, Snowdrop and Foxglove have dust wrappers but theres no information on those either .

Sue, I'm working on the bibliographies, I keep finding more and more things I need and it's all adding up!! I will get them as soon as I can though!

I have two Foxglove story books - one I'm keeping (with picture boards and a dust jacket which has no date) and one I'm selling (with picture boards and no jacket) which I've listed as '1960' but it has no date, just a dated inscription to the owner. So you're right - none of them are actually officially dated. I was assuming it must be a reprint given the date inside, but maybe it wasn't! I've never seen the Foxglove Storybook with plain boards so maybe the later ones were originally printed with coloured boards.

Looking in The Cave, I see that the earlier ones show the plain boards.
