Enid's rare flash of humour...

Post by pete9012S »

Enid's rare flash of humour
I think this is Enid Blyton's only book that displays a sense of humour; I remember laughing at it when I was a child, and have introduced some 9 year-old children to it recently and they too laughed at it. As an avid reader of her books when I was young, I can't remember any others that were humorous.
I wonder if anyone will be able to guess the book in question from the review above?
I will tell you if you are getting warm or cold if you would like to take an educated guess on which book is being referred to...

Crumbs - that person can't have read many Enid Blyton books if they've only come across one that's humorous!

If they were talking about younger children I'd go for something like The Adventures of Binkle and Flip, but since they mention nine-year-olds I'll go for The Mystery of the Strange Bundle.

May I make a confession?

I was so intrigued and baffled by Pete's puzzle here that I cheated... I went and Googled the wording of the review and found out which book it was.

And I WILL NOT give it away (and I hope all others here are either stronger at resisting temptation or else won't spoil the fun either), but I will just say one thing: yes, it is a book with some particularly humorous moments, but there is no way known I would have guessed it or thought of it myself as "Enid's only book that displays a sense of humour"!!! I can only say, along with Anita, that that reviewer obviously can't have read that much Enid Blyton if he/she has only ever found one that was funny.

I shall now creep away and leave the game to those who have enough integrity to play fair...

It was a nuisance. An adventure was one thing - but an adventure without anything to eat was quite another thing. That wouldn't do at all. (The Valley of Adventure)

There is humour in abundance throughout Enid's work. Her short stories are brimming with it and so are simple loads of her novels. Every FFO book has humour in it and many of the FFs as well. I have no idea which book is being referred to here so I won't waste time taking a wild guess.

Is it a Find Outer one, Pete, or are you not going to give us a clue.

I immediately thought of "Strange Bundle" which has a good number of laugh aloud moments in it! As others have said, there are plenty of humourous moments in many of the books.

For me personally, one of the funniest books Enid ever wrote is 'The Rilloby Fair Mystery' - there are some great lines in it, from Roger saying to his dad 'They think we're taught manners at home' to Snubby telling Uncle Robert about the Green Hands gang, and Old Ma calling Snubby Loony etc etc. But I guess that's just my opinion, lol!

there are loads of Enid's books that I find funny...but strangely the main contender so far - Strange Bundle - isn't one of them! ;-) I guess its all a matter of taste. :-D

As a child I can remember finding The Three Golliwogs very amusing, as well as Binkle and Flip and Mr Meddle.
'Oh voice of Spring of Youth

Sing on, sing on, and when the sun is gone
I'll warm me with your echoes

At first I thought it was going to be a Mr Twiddle book, which I find very humorous!

Well, if its a Find Outer book, it could be any number of them! I personally find the first one quite humerous - and also The Missing Necklace, and also parts of Pantomime Cat and Missing Man.

In fact, most have a lot of humour...so I can't 'Find Out' which one it is! :?

I read "Tally-Ho Cottage" as a child and could not stop laughing, especially at Fatty in disguise. Is it that one?

I think I'll go for Missing Man, but as many have said, there are a good few lines in many of them really, but Fatty's constant avoiding Eunice makes this a good funny story. :)

Having just read Vanished Prince, reminds me of that scene of Goon on the roundabout and his subsequent dizziness may be another contender... "Lovingly clutching the tiger" when he found he couldn't stand up straight on his own?
