I think that in Five on Kirrin Island again Uncle Quentin made use of the tidal forces. In "Five have plenty of fun" I rather think Elbur was right detecting a minor error in their calculations ;-).

It was a nuisance. An adventure was one thing - but an adventure without anything to eat was quite another thing. That wouldn't do at all. (The Valley of Adventure)

Quite right, Julie. There were three brothers: Eden Kane (real name Richard Sarstedt, born 1940), Peter Sarstedt (1941-2017) and Robin Sarstedt (real name Clive Robin Sarstedt, born 1944). All three brothers had chart hits.

This is the problems that the website "TVTropes" calls "Reed Richards is Useless". Reed Richards is a brilliant scientist, the leader of the Fantastic Four, and has appeared in comics published by Marvel since 1961. But in all this time, Richards never seems to have ever used any of his inventions to help out all the people living in the world.

This TVTropes article looks at the reasons why fictional scientists (like Uncle Quentin and Richards) have to be portrayed this way:

http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/M ... sIsUseless" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

But as I wrote before in this thread:

"I've been wondering whether Uncle Quentin's discoveries somehow are connected to the fact that the Second World War does not seem to have taken place in the Famous Five Universe. Maybe Uncle Quentin discovered something so powerful that the Axis simply would not dare to challenge the British Empire."

I remember when I first started reading the Fives books, I was fascinated by the word "blueprint". It was the first time I'd come across this word and I imagined it to be a piece of blue paper covered with indecipherable squiggles that represented the formulae of Uncle Quentin's inventions. At that age, I didn't have a clue to what he was working on but I was certain that it was jolly important.

Love the Uncle Quentin/Peter Sarstedt comparison! :lol:

I first encountered the word "blueprint" in the Famous Five books too, John. I didn't know exactly what a blueprint was either but I pictured it as being like blue carbon paper.

I think I first heard the word 'Blueprint' in an Enid Blyton book too! Also, I think I first came across the word 'atom-bomb' in Enid Blyton too! :D

hearts mad delight,
Sing on, sing on, and when the sun is gone
I'll warm me with your echoes
through the night.'

Yes I envisioned a "Blueprint" as an immensely valuable roll of blue paper which would reveal fantastic secrets if only one could get one's hands on it. Talk about taking words literally. :lol:
