I have all of them. Bought 10 years ago. Very cheap. £3.50 each including postage.

Yes, it must be the short story collection (Five Have a Puzzling Time and Other Stories).

Ah yes - probably the short story collection. I never class that as a book, because it was never around when Enid was writing. :-D

Actually, I'm surprised, given Enid's great talent as a businesswoman that she didn't exploit her Famous Five short stories more and release them as a collection! :D

Five have a puzzling time, all short stories are written by Enid Blyton, aren't they? ;-)

Just noticed this 1948 book contains a 1941 Sunny Stories Story that mentions the war:

Peter's Good Idea
Story: Sunny Stories No.211 Jan 24, 1941

" Peter, that loft is full of apples! " said Tom. "
We've brought one for you. Isn't it a beauty? "
"Tom! You can't do that! They are not your
apples! " cried Peter.
" But, Peter, they are all going bad," said Tom
crossly. " We may as well eat them whilst they
are good. It's such a waste in war-time to let
things go bad."

" I wonder if the farmer knows his apples are
going bad,'' said Peter. "It's funny he lets them do
that. Tom, take these apples back. Bad or good,
they are not ours to take."
Tom was sulky. He didn't want to do as Peter
told him.
" A kind heart always brings its own reward," said Mrs. Lee.

That's interesting. A few wartime Mr. Twiddle stories refer to black curtains or having to queue for meat, at least one Mr. Meddle tale features dark streets and a Mr. Pink-Whistle story talks of a mother having saved up sugar to make a birthday cake, but I don't think the war is mentioned directly.

They were certainly available as single cassettes, Pete, as I have got 'Strange Messages' but not 'Castle'.

Image

They are incredibly difficult to find and not cheap when they do turn up! They were also both available as single Phonogram records, but the one that you have pictured is a Phillips one which was a double LP.

I find the 'mystery of the Strange Messages' cover to be very strange indeed! ;-) I wonder why the children appear to be in some kind of secret passage, when actually there isn't one in the 'strange messages' book! :-D

I like the "blurb" on the back which praises Enid Blyton for her "sadly, rarely mentioned... ability to write for children of all age levels" and talks of how young readers begged for more stories about the same characters.

The 'blurb' is good I agree.Could the cover be depicting the big house in the book...The Ivies? Did they go into the cellars to hunt around? Or has the artist got secret passages on the brain! :D

It could have been...here's the same scene (I think!) as depicted in the original version -

It may not be all that clear, but these cassettes came in a box and the blurb that you can see in my picture above is what is on the inside front cover. The boxes are very scarce indeed and normally if the cassettes turn up the box is long gone. This is what the front of the box looks like. As you can see from the earlier picture the boxes are considerably bigger than the cassettes.

Image

I have three of these boxes all bought at the same time from the same source, but I have never seen any others for sale - Mary Mouse and Secret Seven are my other two as you can see in cave under Phonogram Cassettes.
