I’ve got the 1997 anniversary edition and it’s in Chapter 13 - An afternoon with Martin.

Yes - well spotted! here's the illustration in question - as George arrives to take a look through the coastguard's telescope to see if she can spot Timmy...

We can only imagine what was in the illustrator's briefs when they received the commision to illustrate this book.

Welcome Nigel D and well spotted about Timmy and the illustration!

Continuing with FF&D series I am currently going through, in the Strange Messages.

Fatty speaks with Mrs. Trotteville about a possible Smith in Barton Grange as she has lived in the village for years and later she confirms she has lived in Peterswood for 19 years. We know that the Trotteville family arrived and decide to settle in the village in Burnt Cottage which is definitely not that long.

Am I missing something?

*I am sure I posted this yesterday - cannot find the post today so posting again.*

My copy is a twelfth impression and the error has been airbrushed out!

Interesting that’s been airbrushed out, Nigel #1. Wonder how the mistake ended up in the re-prints.

I’m not as fortunate as you. I’m stuck on the outskirts of Swindon. From Chippenham originally so hoping to move back there over the next 18 months. Can’t abide Swindon.

Me neither. It seems to be the Mecca of Wiltshire where most of the money goes to. I like Lacock and we often go the Whitehall GC. Having always lived in Salisbury, I am more than happy to stay here!

Interesting! In my fifth impression (which is the earliest version I have) Timmy is still there as bold as brass! I wonder when he was first 'air-brushed' out? It seems amazing to me that he got as far as the fifth edition without anyone noticing!

Its also interesting that, as was originally said, the centenary editions (1997) seem to have reinstated him!

I believe the centenary edition has used the the first edition as a copy.

Its interesting, because the centenary editions seem to be a strange mixture. Obviously they went back to the original illustrations, but the text is the modernised (1970's and probably later?) versions. For example, in Mystery Moor, the gypsies are all referred to as 'travellers'. :-(

A few minor textual revisions had been made from the late 1960s but the text was edited quite extensively specially for the 1997 editions - even though the original illustrations were used!
