I always think it is when George is cross she calls Timmy Timothy and Uncle Quentin always seems to call him Timothy. All the children refer to him as Tim or Timmy I think!

Well, questions such as this start to niggle at me, so I went and had a look! The first mention of 'Timmy' that I see is actually as early as book 2, "Five Go Adventuring Again"; page 22 of the 1950 edition, H&S hardback.
Phew!

In the first book " Five on a Treasure Island" in Chapter 3 where Timothy is introduced to George's cousins as Timothy.

In the same chapter and beyond that Timothy is called Tim in this first book.

I assume that as the series went on Enid settled for Timmy as the usual appellation. Timothy and Tim dwindle to almost nothing, don't they!

Five Go to Billycock Hill - 1957 - The very last mention of 'Timothy' in the books..
A man came round the gorse bush - rather a peculiar figure, untidy, with glasses slipping down his nose, and his hair much too long. He carried a big butterfly net and stopped when he saw the five children.
‘Hallo!’ he said. ‘Who are all these, Toby? Quite a crowd!’

‘Friends of mine, Mr Gringle,’ said Toby solemnly. ‘Allow me to introduce them. Julian Kirrin, Dick Kirrin, Anne Kirrin, George Kirrin, their cousin - and their dog Timothy.’

‘Ha - pleased to meet you!’ said Mr Gringle, and came shambling forward, his big butterfly net over his shoulder. Behind his glasses shone curiously bright eyes.

I know I found it quite a 'shock' when I first read 'Five On A Treasure Island' (aged about 25) to discover that 'Timmy' (who I'd read about in Smuggler's Top and Mystery Moor annual versions as a child) was originally called 'Timothy'! What a mouthful! As dog names go its a bit formal!
