I also have Rubbalong Tales and The Queer Adventure...though the latter doesn't have a dust jacket, so I'm on the look-out - but its not usually cheap!

I have a picture of his signature in Rubbalong Tales in the Cave. This is how he signed all his illustrations and he thought it would be best to do that rather than in his normal handwriting.



Probably fairly easy to produce a forgery, but I know it is genuine as I was with him when he did it. I went with Barbara Stoney to see him in a retirement home. It was a very nice room that he had with his own furniture and plenty of his illustrations hanging on the walls.

Thanks Tony! I must admit, I didn't think of looking in the cave for the signed page. I really love his work.

I don't know the book myself, but I'm guessing the publishers may have reversed the names because "Tuppeny, Feefo and Jinks" has a more appealing rhythm to it when you say it out loud. Rather like "lions and tigers and bears"! (Oh my! )

I agree with Courtenay. Tuppeny, Feefo and Jinks does sound better.

I'm not sure that it makes any difference to me whatever order the names are. I certainly don't 'hear' one being better than the other. I would just prefer it to be the way Enid first suggested.

i'm certainly making amends regards not having many of the Malory Towers books or St Clare's in dust-wrappers. I've now got three Malory Towers in DW's - the latest acquisition is 'Upper Fourth at Malory Towers' - with the Lilian Buchanan dust jacket. I'm collecting the Lilian Buchanan versions on purpose, as I prefer them - she's one of my favourite illustrators.



On the other hand, with the St Clare's series, I prefer the original wrappers - well - the coloured ones - some of which are later edition wrappers - by W Lyndsay Cable. I got my first St Clare's in a dust wrapper today - my favourite wrapper and one of my favourite incidents in the St Clare's series -

I also prefer Lilian Buchanan's dust jackets for the Malory Towers books (not that I have any of either artists') they're much brighter and more lively than Stanley Lloyd's.

Definitely! Stanley Lloyd's would look better on 1940's editions of Vogue!!

I'm torn with the Malory Towers wrappers as I like some of each. The Upper Fourth like in your image is nicer than than the original, but Second Form on the other hand would be the other way way around. I find this proves a tricky problem when it comes to dust jackets as for some I prefer certain versions and want to swap for them, yet at the same time I like a set to be all the same but because the writing style for the title is different their never going to match up .

This is a nice wrapper, but I would love to buy a better copy as it doesn't have a very good spine.
