Some people like to restore old books as their hobby, once that is done, the books will look okay.

Re: What Enid Blyton book have you recently bought?
True. Mind you, I can imagine someone taking the time to restore books in that condition if they were really rare and hard to find in a good condition — then it'd be worth the trouble — but when it's not all that difficult to get first editions of the Famous Five in much better nick than that (especially without dust jackets), you have to wonder... But if someone really wants them and is willing to pay £5.99 (or possibly more) + postage, that's their business, I suppose.
At least the seller is honest enough to say "poor condition" (which anyone can see from the photos anyway) rather than the usual euphemisms of "acceptable" or "reading copy"!

Everyone's taste in book conditions are different, who are we to judge what others should buy!

True, but its also our right to say they are complete nutters, lol!Julie2owlsdene wrote:Everyone's taste in book conditions are different, who are we to judge what others should buy!
Like Courtenay, I can understand buying books in that condition if they are something rare, like a first edition of Dickens, or Austen etc, but these can still be found relatively easily. Also, a mended book would not be worth so much to a buyer than a complete original. Still, as you say - each to his/her own!

That seems a small price for 4 first editions if you have later copies and want originals to compare the changes that have been made. Even bad condition has the original wording.
Just a thought.

I've thrown books of that condition away, rather than sell them on eBay!

Re: What Enid Blyton book have you recently bought?
Well, I think we would all agree that if the seller wants to sell those books, and a buyer is willing to buy them, they have every right to do so — I don't think anyone's disputing that. I guess it's just that most of us here wouldn't spend any amount of money on four FF books in such obviously poor condition, even if they are all first editions, because we're aware that it's not too difficult to get first editions (or other early editions), at least without dust jackets, in much better condition than that for reasonable prices. But gosh, if someone's happy to buy those books, I wouldn't stop them — I'm just saying that wouldn't be my choice!

...I'm wishing I hadn't thrown two Noddy books away in similar condition the other week...maybe I should have auctioned them off!

Or sold the full-page illustrations from them as "original prints" — remember that one??

Yes, indeed.

Re: What Enid Blyton book have you recently bought?
Gosh, one of them is even an endpaper. Well, at least the seller is decent enough to admit what they are, if you scroll down! But still, why buy one page of a book for £3.99 when you could buy a reasonable copy of the whole book for not much more than that?

Re: What Enid Blyton book have you recently bought?
I probably wouldn't have thrown the books away unless they were mouldy or had scribbling or tears on every single page. I'd have cut out any pictures that could be rescued and kept them for craftwork - e.g. decoupage, bookmarks, motifs to stick on plain notepaper, scenery and characters for a toy theatre, etc.Rob Houghton wrote:I'm wishing I hadn't thrown two Noddy books away in similar condition the other week...maybe I should have auctioned them off!
