Oh, so that was the one you were talking about earlier, that was supposed to have a Maxey cover as pictured?? Sorry, I was getting confused.

Pete, I was thinking about your recurring problem.
Does Tony maybe have the correct cover photo in the Cave of Books?
If you could copy & paste the right cover and attach it to your e-mails when getting in touch with future potential sellers might help them to find the right one?

In amazon I always end up with second hand book stores who have so many books that they cannot even check which edition they are going to sell and send to me.

How about Stella & Rose?

The same happened to me with 'World of Books' - not to be confused with 'World of Rare Books' on eBay. I thought I had bought Noddy Meets Father Christmas a few years back with a DW - but received an updated version without any gollies! :-(

1976 edition Betty Maxey external & internals.£2.80 delivered - pristine condition.

Has proved quite elusive - bought one earlier after checking it had genuine Maxey internals with seller and Soper's internals arrived,
The seller said I could keep Soper's internals as they would too much of a faff to return ...
I just checked to see if I have a copy of this with Maxey Illustrations, but unfortunately not. :-( Mine has the Eileen Soper ones - so it must obviously be a tricky one to find! I'll keep my eyes open while on eBay! :-)

Don't forget, World of Books and World of Rare Books are actually the same company — it's just that their rare books department always provides photos of the actual books being sold, while the non-rare books department doesn't. But they DO at least have the honesty to state that they use stock photos, unlike some sellers...

yes - quite right - they are the same company, but their photos for World of Rare Books are always photos of the actual item. :-)

I've made a point never to use sellers who only use stock photos. I don't see the point, unless you aren't bothered what you're buying! Even worse are those sellers who sell books without any photo!

How about this one, Pete? I should think that if they weren't Maxey illustrations by 1978, then they never would be!

Yes,John,it does exist as I am trying to replace my battered childhood copy that has the SUPERB Maxey external & internals!

Thanks for the links Rob - will check them if I survive the inevitable Maxey bashing that will now ensue! :D

Hope you get the correct replace your battered copy next time, Pete. :D

I have no idea of how difficult it is to get the Betty Maxey's illustrations for this title.

Just received: Five-Minute Tales and Fifteen-Minute Tales with wrappers in the post today. I was amazed I won them both and I don't usually pay that much for a book/books, but, as I'm due to be mangled (wisdom tooth extraction etc - it doesn't help having sleep apnoea and using a CPAP machine every night - v dry mouth) at the Dentists this Wednesday I thought I'd get something comforting! Nice to have all four minute books now.

Actually, lovely books pop up (eg eBay) now and again, but, oh the money wanted for a lot of them whether buy now or by bidding is astonishing, phew, the amounts folk pay, amazing! I know pot-kettle-black!

PS long live Betty and Eileen's work, yes and other artists too (except the more recent caractature types - shudder)!

Sadly I didn't keep any Blyon paperbacks (silly me!) as I reached my mid-teens, and I can't remember which illustrator I had in Plenty of Fun, sorry, Pete! Saying that I have bought 2 Betty Maxey 1974 hardbacks (books 6 and 19) recently, so if book 14 got the hardback (were they all done? Will look at the Cave soon) treatment and I come across that I'll let you know!

What a wonderful, balanced post.
A very fair observation which I along with many (or stretching it two or three others) heartily endorse. :D
