I'm currently reading Enid Blyton's Picnic Party before I go to sleep! 8)
'Oh voice of Spring of Youth
hearts mad delight,
Sing on, sing on, and when the sun is gone
I'll warm me with your echoes
through the night.'

And I've been reading a portion of Before I Go to Sleep each time I go on a picnic!

It was a nuisance. An adventure was one thing - but an adventure without anything to eat was quite another thing. That wouldn't do at all. (The Valley of Adventure)

Highly recommended  !, a good wind down at the end of the day, particularly after watching a superb Spanish thriller (with subtitles) called I KNOW WHO YOU ARE on catchup!

I am currently reading The Sea of Adventure. It was the very first Blyton book that I read, followed by two more Adventure books, but I didn't read my fourth one until I was in my 40s!

As the children are relaxing comfortably on a springy bed of heather, I keep wondering whether Enid ever tried it!!

They must have an itchiness after that!

I am reading Boys' & Girls' Circus Book. One of the very few EB books that I haven't read yet!

Despite a few improbabilities and the Scottish islands having an almost tropical climate in May, The Sea of Adventure has always been a favourite of mine. Drifting dreaminess turns gradually to thrilling adventure and there are scenes of emotional impact too. I love the remote location and the seabirds. A truly stirring story which makes me long to go off exploring.

Boys' & Girls' Circus Book (which I have in the later edition, Enid Blyton's Circus Book) is a great read too, fun and heartwarming. I first read it in my early thirties while sitting on the train on my way to an Enid Blyton Day!

Reading "Five on a Secret Trail" at the moment I had exactly the same thought, for the sort of heather I have seen has been more scratchy than springy. It makes you wonder how much they needed to make a comfortable bed from! :?

They weren't gathering the heather, they were just lying straight on top of it as it grew - desperately uncomfortable at best or painful at worst!

Wasn't there at least one or maybe two blankets aka rugs between their bodies and the heather?

I think the children in Secret Island found the heather less than comfortable by morning too. Sometimes there was an available rug to help a bit!

I'm also wondering about the comfort of gorse as a shelter! Needs must, I suppose, in the interests of the adventure.
