This is definitely one of Blyton's great strengths as a children's writer. She seemed to understand, either instictively or through her work as a teacher, the incredible power of a child's imagination. A few key words are enough to stimulate the young mind's innate ability to conjure up vivid scenery at will.

As I grew older my parents would push books onto me, supposedly more suitable for my age group, but I found the long, flowery, descriptions, most of them seemed to contain, just boring. I was perfectly capable of summoning up ruined castles or gloomy forests, using my own fertile imagination. I didn't need endless adjective-ridden passages to paint the pictures for me. I just wanted to get to the story!
