I'm not interested in Lord of the Rings either - but Gary is writing about some aspects of the series by the look of it. You said you wanted to read a book by Gary Russell - so there they are!
Of course a book about his experiences acting in the Five series would be lovely I'm sure and one day he says he may write it.

Nigel's post regarding those other books was actually in direct reply to Machupicchu, who did state she wanted to read a book by Gary Russell. Hence, he showed her some books Gary had written. I don't see any need for snarkiness about any of it.
"It's the ash! It's falling!" yelled Julian, almost startling Dick out of his wits...
"Listen to its terrible groans and creaks!" yelled Julian, almost beside himself with impatience.

That's all right, Machupicchu. Thanks also to Daisy and Fiona for explaining my link to Gary's books. I never imagined it would cause such confusion.

I meant his memoirs from his Famous Five days.
I believe this is what you are after?

What a great link. Thank you.

Although for some inexplicable reason I could not take to the 1970's Famous Five on tv when I was younger, I always enjoy reading Gary's experiences of filming the series.

I agree. I think I only saw one or two of them on TV when I was a kid. I've seen them all since but as a child I don't recall being into them either. Maybe it was to do with the channel they were shown on...? Not BBC? As a child I pretty much watched BBC children's TV exclusively between 4pm and 5.30pm.

I was also very slightly too young - aged 7 and 8. I would have appreciated it more aged 9 and 0, as I hadn't read any Famous Five books before my ninth birthday - when I received a Famous Five annual of Smuggler's Top.
'Oh voice of Spring of Youth
hearts mad delight,
Sing on, sing on, and when the sun is gone
I'll warm me with your echoes
through the night.'

I'm not sure if I'm not missing some kind of ironic humour here, Rob. It is widely documented on these forums which channel produced and showed the series. Southern Televison - the ITV channel for the south of England.

Apologies if I'm missing the point and/or I'm not taking you seriously when you are, in fact, being so..

No - wasn't being ironic - I'd just temporarily forgotten! It makes sense though because as I said, I never watched any children's TV (except occasionally lunch time's 'Rainbow' etc) that wasn't BBC. So I wouldn't have seen many of the Southern Television Famous Five's at the time - if any.

And were Southern Television's programmes actually transmitted nationwide?

Yes, they were transmitted to all ITV regions. (I assume this includes Ulster TV- in Ireland).I'll check when I get a chance- remind me if I forget.
