The Enid Blyton Society

At the end of Sunday's programme Strictly Come Dancing, they said that next week's show will be the 'Famous Five', ie, that there are only five couples left in the show. I thought it was great that an Enid Blyton phrases has made it into general every day references.

In a Morecambe and Wise Christmas Special Ern is referred to as 'Enid Blyton' because of the volume of work he has produced.

I know elsewhere it has been mentioned that an Enid Blyton question has featured in the TV programme Pointless. So I was wondering if any one could think of any other Enid Blyton references on TV?

Yes, when The Chase was on ITV 1 at 5pm, I have heard a number of questions about Enid Blyton. I think one was who owned Timmy, and I can't remember what other question they had. I think it may have been who wrote the Famous Five!

My sister was watching Horrid Henry then other day. Basically, Henry had a raffle ticket and was watching the draw on television. The numbers called out were made into alliterations; Famous Five, Secret Seven and Terrific three. It made me watch for a little while, I have to say but no more references were made.

Enid Blyton is mentioned as the author of a locally produced blue movie in an episode of Only Fools and Horses. There's nothing malicious about it; it's just Boycie jokingly associating it with a writer renowned for their innocent work!

That's interesting, which episode is that? It's a long time since I watched Only Fools.

The free Metro newspaper has a daily quiz and today one of the questions was "Who created the Secret Seven?"

On 'The Chase' one question: "How many were in The Famous Five".
The contestant replied, "five" grrr!.

I'd love to know if Morecambe and Wise were Enid Blyton fans, or just commenting on a household name of the time. As I've mentioned before, Eric calls Ernie 'Enid Blyton' in one of their shows, a Christmas Special I think it was. I've just been watching their Two of a Kind series from 1962, and in two separate shows they mention Noddy.

"Susie and Binkie" were the answer to "Who wanted to become members of the Secret Seven?" in an ABC radio quiz once.

Watching The Chase right now and in the final round came "In Enid Blyton's Secret Seven who was Janet's older brother?"

The contestant buzzed.

The voice over lady says his name "Peter".

Peter says... pass.

Bradley Walsh gives the correct answer... "Peter".
