Is that the time he pretended to tie his shoelace and ran off?

No but I loved that scene. :D I think that was in the Vanished Prince when Fatty rode home without lights on his bike.

The time I'm thinking of is when Fatty was dressed as a red headed messenger boy and had just got the signature of Old Nosey, Mrs Tittle and Mrs Moon and, deep in thought he ran over a dog and had got off his bike to see if it was alright. Goon came along and caught him thinking he was another red headed delivery boy.

Oh right.
Was it when he stuttered "Fffffffff Tttttttt....." and Goon got tired of waiting for him to get his name out and let him go?

No, not then either I'm afraid. That was the Strange messages.

The time I'm thinking of is when Goon actually took Fatty and locked him up.

He didn't repeat the old newspaper-under-the-door-and-poke-the-key-out-with-a-wire trick, did he?

(I should know — I re-read Spiteful Letters not that long ago — but I genuinely can't remember that scene!! I know he did use that trick in the previous book, Secret Room, but I'm not sure if it came up again in later mysteries.)

Gosh-a-roonie, I wasn't expecting that to be right!  More fool Goon for leaving the key in the lock on the other side...

Sticking with Spiteful Letters — what was the title of the book Gladys lent to Bets, and why did Bets find it rather boring?

It was something like The Little Saint I think

It was exactly that — and for bonus brownie points (don't worry, having got the first part correct is enough), why did Bets find the book boring?

Because it was about someone who was too good to be true?

Question
What was the name of the lane that Ern dropped his clues in when he was kidnapped?

Yes, that's it, whereas (as Enid tells us) Bets "liked to read about naughty, lively children." I occasionally wonder if that was Enid having a quiet dig at the various critics who have written her own stories off as endlessly moralising and goody-goody. She knew what real children really like to read about!

I can't remember the answer to your latest question, though, so I'll leave it to someone who can!
