Many thanks, Eddie. :D

In which FFO novel does this dramatic paragraph appear?

'The Inspector went silently up the stairs followed by two of his men. They all wore rubber-soled shoes and made no sound at all. Right up to the top of the house they went, to a room where light came from the keyhole. It was the _______ ______.'

It was a nuisance. An adventure was one thing - but an adventure without anything to eat was quite another thing. That wouldn't do at all. (The Valley of Adventure)

A very gentle nudge, Courtenay.
'Go down to the side-shows by the river this afternoon. I'll meet you somewhere in disguise. Bet you won't know me!' wrote Fatty.

Correct, Daisy. I first read that book only last year and found that aspect a bit amusing, as my boss at work also happens to be a Mr Holland. But he's a thoroughly decent chap and has never been involved in any shady activities — to our knowledge, at least...

Is it Tally-HoCottage when Ern is asleep in the tree house and gets woken up and sees the swans?

Correct book, but Ern hears what he thinks are swans, but which the Find-Outers decide later must have been a rowing boat.

Thanks, Daisy.

Can you name two of the books where Goon is convinced he has the correct suspect only to be proved wrong by the Find-Outers?

Hmmm... Disappearing Cat and Pantomime Cat? (Bit of a feline theme going there. )

Thanks, Snugglepot.

Sticking with Disappearing Cat, what was the real reason why Fatty collected cigar ends? (Or at least, the implied real reason, since he doesn't actually confirm it when pressed. )
