It was a nuisance. An adventure was one thing - but an adventure without anything to eat was quite another thing. That wouldn't do at all. (The Valley of Adventure)

No man who scorns hope and charity may pass in to the City of Happiness?

Still not quite there...
Here's a hint: the "in" is incorrect, but so is another word in the guesses so far.

"No man who scorns hope and charity may pass on to the huts of happiness." ? Surely not, yet it is alliterative.

"No man who scorns love and charity may pass on to the city of happiness."
Sounds like something that might have been said to James Onedin after he famously said, "Charity? Charity? Where's the profit in that?"

Re: Hangman
Hooray, you've got it, Dave! Well done. I've never heard of James Onedin (just did some Googling... the TV show was slightly before my time and I'm not sure it was ever shown in Australia), but the Blyton quote comes from The Land of Far-Beyond, as Daisy guessed.Domino wrote:"No man who scorns love and charity may pass on to the city of happiness."

Re: Hangman
Thanks, Courtenay. Sorry, I realised that only older forumites would have watched 'The Onedin Line'. It was very popular and ran from 1971 to 1980. James Onedin (played by Peter Gilmore) was something of an anti-hero. Indeed, he only marries his first wife, Anne (played by Anne Stallybrass, who would later marry Peter Gilmore in real life) to get his hands on her father's ship, the 'Charlotte Rhodes', although they come to genuinely love each other. He was always extremely cynical and ruthless in his business dealings. Hence, the line I quoted. I think I'd be surprised if it wasn't sold to ABC Television in Australia.

Re: Hangman
It quite possibly was — we do get a LOT of British programmes (mostly the very good ones!), but as I said, it's a little before my time and I certainly don't remember it ever being repeated on TV during my childhood, as many of the most popular shows were.Domino wrote:I think I'd be surprised if it wasn't sold to ABC Television in Australia.
