The only other word I can think of is So, but that doesn't sound right.

Guess we'll have to wait for a Blytonian expert to get it.

If I give you the clue that just prior to this quote, a question is asked, will that help you find the missing word?

Edit.
I am really tired so am off to bed now.
I will check in again in the morning.
Good night.

Not really. It can't be No as there is no comma after it. I'm baffled. But, as I said, someone else is sure to know it.

It is NO Dave but with a dash, not a comma, and a dash would have been very confusing in these circumstances!

Hmmm. I think it is more confusing with nothing to indicate a pause. I think I would have replaced the dash with a comma.

Well done to you for solving it. With the time difference, you've got a bit of time to think up the next one.

I don't mind if one of the D wins. Both are equally good. :D

Yes, it is "NO".
I did not know what to do about the dash after it. I did not want to replace it with a comma as that is not correct but it was too hard to put the dash in. Could we make up a rule that there if there is a dash we substitute an "Underscore" or something to represent it?

I will give the win to Dave as he did come up with the word "NO" even if he doubted it was correct.

Anyway, it was Fatty who said this after he had announced he was going to the flower shop and Bets asked if it was to buy another Coleus plant, but he replied that he was buying roses as he had offended his mother by approaching one of her friends in his tramp clothes and announced who he was.

The idea of using a different sort of dash to show a dash in the actual quotation/title/phrase (as opposed to a missing letter) sounds good to me.
"Heyho for a starry night and a heathery bed!" - Jack, The Secret Island.

"There is no bond like the bond of having read and liked the same books."
- E. Nesbit, The Wonderful Garden.

Thanks, Anne (Snugglepot) and Ilsa (Daisy). Anita, I think perhaps another way is to use plus signs instead of dashes to indicate the letters to be guessed. That way the original punctuation can be used without confusion (there's not going to be plus sign used in the original) and it might even be easier to read. I'll try it, anyway.

Here's the next one (a statement):

+++ +++ ++++++ +++++++ +++++

Guessing caps on, everyone - here we go!
