Cheers, Dave and Courtenay. From the position of the comma I realised it was likely to be ---------, the --------- so I just let the possibilities run through my mind.

How about an R?

(By the way, Anita, out of interest — where does "Coriolanus, the Exile" come from? I can't find him in the Cave.)

It was a nuisance. An adventure was one thing - but an adventure without anything to eat was quite another thing. That wouldn't do at all. (The Valley of Adventure)

I've got 'Coriolanus, the Exile' in Stories From World History Retold - Tales of the Romans, though it also appeared in The Teachers World [sic]. It is listed in the Cave but Coriolanus has been mistyped as 'Corialanus'!

Sorry - no Rs, Courtenay.

Just one A:

As I said, I was able to solve Dave's puzzle because I looked at the structure -------------, /- - -/ -------------- and worked out that the middle word could well be "the". That gave me a pattern to follow - Shadow, the Sheep-Dog or Ticklem-Up, the Gnome or Mighty-0ne, the Wizard - but I rejected all of those because they didn't fit. At last I thought of something that did fit - Coriolanus, the Exile.

L, please.

By the way, where does “Coriolanus, the Exile” come from? I don’t recall seeing this title or quotation in any of the Enid Blyton books in my collection. Perhaps I’m missing something.
