It was a nuisance. An adventure was one thing - but an adventure without anything to eat was quite another thing. That wouldn't do at all. (The Valley of Adventure)

Re: Hangman
Looks like a good guess, Courtenay. I got "Richard" but was stumped there was no "Kent", "Owl's Dene" or "Bentley"
"It's the ash! It's falling!" yelled Julian, almost startling Dick out of his wits...
"Listen to its terrible groans and creaks!" yelled Julian, almost beside himself with impatience.

It's one I knew from when I was little (my sister and I were both big fans of anything to do with Robin Hood), so that's how I figured out who else "Richard" could be!

Re: Hangman
Excellent work, Courtenay. You weren't the only one to be fascinated by Robin Hood when little. I remember going to see the Disney film, "The Story of Robin Hood and His Merrie Men", in 1952, which starred Richard Todd as Robin. Then in 1953, there was the BBC serial, "Robin Hood", which had Patrick Troughton as Robin. In 1955, ITV had the Richard Greene series, which was famously written by several Hollywood scriptwriters who had been blacklisted by the McCarthy enquiry, using pseudonyms. The storylines oozed quality.
The book you need to read, Ilsa and Fiona, is "Tales of Robin Hood" (later called "The Robin Hood Book".
The short straw's fallen your way now, Courtenay. Over to you.

Re: Hangman
I tried really hard to post this yesterday but nothing was working!
Let's not forget the classics of Maid Marian and her Merry Men from CBBC, the animated Disney classic of the 70s and of course the marvellous Kevin Costner version
LOCKSLEY I'M GOING TO CUT YOUR HEART OUT WITH A SPOON.
Why a spoon, cousin? Why not an axe?
Because it's DULL, you twit. It'll hurt more.
