It was a nuisance. An adventure was one thing - but an adventure without anything to eat was quite another thing. That wouldn't do at all. (The Valley of Adventure)

Last one in the shop, madam. You'll have to make do with 'Repose' and forget about the 'Mon'.

I'm going to take a Blytonesque guess, going by the quote Dave used here recently as well...

Re: Hangman
Good guess - and, of course, a correct one, Courtenay. I thought it might bambooozle as, in this instance, EB used Woffly rather than her later Woffles. It was the cover story from the June 1929 edition of Sunny Stories.
I'm still intrigued by how she came up with the name. I'm sure you are right in saying you she was alluding to the twitching of a rabbit's nose. I can find no evidence that woffle / woffly exists as a word, even in dialect or slang. She seems to have invented it. Was she thinking of waffle / waffly (which is pronounced the same)? The usual meaning of waffle is to talk at length in very imprecise terms. In America (and subsequenly here) it refers to the kind of crisp pancake with a criss cross pattern. More obscurely, it's a Scots dialect word meaning to wave. None of which would lead to its being used to describe rabbit nose-twitching. In the post-war period, a number of children had pet rabbits called Woffles. Presumably, inspired by EB.
Not important, I know, but a fascinating insight into EB's thought processes, even when youngish.
Anyway, the Hangman baton is in your hands again, Courtenay.

Re: Hangman
As well as rabbits, I've come across mice and rats called Woffles. Like Courtenay, I've always thought the word referred to their twitching noses.

Thanks, Dave. I haven't had time to think of a new line yet, but am keeping it in mind and will post something ASAP. I haven't forgotten!
