Sorry to break the continuity but I must just come back to the first question - yes, the rocks were red, but the answer to 'why?' is because Enid got it wrong!!!!!!!!!!!!

Red would denote the presence of iron, the rocks should have been green!

The rocks were red because the miners had felt sick looking at green rocks, containing copper and so had painted them red instead

They did go behind a curtain of creeper. It took them into a cave with a dark pool. In the pool was a wheel to turn that released a rope ladder from the ceiling so that they could get into the mountain.

They had, had the measles and the docter said they weren't well enough to go back to school. The children didn't want a governess but their Mum had a job so when the governess came to see them Jack got Kiki to be noisy and Philip had his rats appear.
