George Kirrin

George Kirrin or Elizabeth Allen?

George Kirrin, although they are both interesting, strong characters.

George Kirrin or

Jack Arnold?

Another interesting pair. I'll go for Jack Arnold as he really makes The Secret Island which is one of my all time favourite books.

Jack Arnold or Sally Hope?

Hmm, again quite difficult, they are different, but both are nice. But I go for Jack as he is I think a stronger character.

Jack Arnold
or
Jack Trent?

Jack Trent - really because I think we get to know him better.

Jack Trent
or
Roger Lynton?

Jack Trent - find him to have a bit more personality than Roger. Not sure that Roger and Diana are amongst Blyton's stronger characters.
Okay - Jack Trent or Barney? (I'm not sure if I should offer an opinion about a character I propose for someone else, but can't resist it. There's something I really like about Barney - one of Blyton's *best* characters, and totally outshines his friends the Lyntons, in my opinion. As for Snubby - I'm not sure I *like* him; but he's very distinctive, memorable, and downright funny. But he has nowhere near the subtle resonances Barney has, at least for me. Few Blyton characters do, though.)

Barney. I agree he is one of Blyton's most interesting characters.

Oh - difficult! I like both, but in quite different ways.
I will defer on that and maybe let someone else decide.

I'll take Barney, even though I've only read one of the books about him. Barney is handsome and intriguing. George is sulky and annoying.

Barney

Fatty?

It was a nuisance. An adventure was one thing - but an adventure without anything to eat was quite another thing. That wouldn't do at all. (The Valley of Adventure)

Ooh, another difficult choice when they are so different. I'll go for Fatty as he has given me so many laughs over the years.

Julian?

Difficult again; but I think I'd have to go for Julian. I know that would be an unpopular choice for many - but for me it's probably as much to do with the greater resonances and memories the Famous Five series and its characters having for me more than the Find-Outers books - as much that for me as the actual characters: I do find Fatty one of Enid Blyton's very best characters, and his supposed arrogance doesn't bother me as much as it does some others.

Julian or Andy (of the Adventurous Four)?

Oh... after a bit of hard thinking I'll go for Andy - I have just re-read The Adventurous Four and was impressed by Andy's leadership qualities and resourcefulness.

Getting back to the game though, Phillip Mannering. I love his ability with animals and general resourcefulness and brvavery.

Aren't we meant to reuse the one we prefer and offer another choice — so it would now be Phillip Mannering and... ?
