Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

Lost Sherlock Holmes story discovered
A long-lost Sherlock Holmes story has been rediscovered more than a hundred years after it was first published.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote the story, titled Sherlock Homes: Discovering the Border Burghs and, by deduction, the Brig Bazaar, in 1904 to raise money for a bridge in Selkirk, Scotland.

It was unearthed by town resident Walter Elliot, 80, who discovered it under a pile of books in his attic.

He believes it may have lain there for almost 50 years.

The 1,300-word tale was printed in a 48-page book of short stories, Book o' the Brig.

It was put together by locals to raise money to replace a bridge over the Ettrick river that had been destroyed by floods in 1902.

Conan Doyle, who was a regular visitor to the area, agreed to contribute a story.

In it Holmes deduces that Watson is going on a trip to Selkirk.

I've only read one Sherlock Holmes book, & that was 'Hound of the Baskervilles'. I much preferred watching the old Black & White films starring Basil Rathbone, who played the best SH ever....My personal opinion, of course! :D

I've just bought a pack of three Sherlock Holmes books from The Book People. They're in my (150-strong) pile of books to be read...

It's a fascinating news. Thank you, Pete. :D

It's normal to have TBR pile, Rosy.

I know one blogger, Moira who had done the challenge to reduce her TBR pile. Maybe her experience will give you some inspiration and motivation to deal with your TBR pile. :D

I know her from GAD group. :D

I see a 3 part drama called ARTHUR & GEORGE begins Monday 2 March at 9pm on ITV, starring Martin Clunes as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in a gripping real-life mystery - didn't realise Jeremy Brett who played Sherlock Holmes several times is Martin Clunes cousin, obviously a family of thespians!

I am a big Sherlock Holmes fan, and have read all the Conan Doyle Holmes stories, The Hound of the Baskervilles, was the first Conan Doyle Holmes story, I read (at school), Basil Rathbone (my first Sherlock), is my favourite Movie Holmes, and Jeremy Brett, is my favourite TV Holmes, I have got some photographs (taken by a family member, at the Sherlock Holmes Memorabilia Company, in Baker Street, in 2002) of props from the Sherlock Holmes Granada series, I could post them on this Thread, for anyone interested in seeing them, I have also got a photograph (taken by the same family member) of the Sherlock Holmes Statue (on Marylebone Road), which I could also post on this Thread, all the photographs were taken on the same day.

To me, Jeremy Brett is THE Sherlock Holmes. No one has ever come close to him, which I guess isn't surprising, as I believe the fictional character eventually took over all aspects of Jeremy's life! :-( No one can beat his excellent performance.

It's interesting that Jeremy Brett was Freddy Eynsford-Hill in 'My Fair Lady' :-)

It was a nuisance. An adventure was one thing - but an adventure without anything to eat was quite another thing. That wouldn't do at all. (The Valley of Adventure)

Here are some photographs (taken by a family member, in 2002), the first four photographs (taken at the Sherlock Holmes Memorabilia Company, in Baker Street), feature props from the Sherlock Holmes Granada series, the last photograph, features the Sherlock Holmes Statue, on Marylebone Road, just outside Baker Street Underground Station.

Great photos, Billy! Seen the statue, but not been to see the props as yet. I'll put that on my list of things to see the next time I'm in London. :D
