That's interesting, Su. My son has got The House of Silk but I haven't (yet) read it.

In one of Anthony Horowitz's 'Alex Rider' books, Snakehead, Alex is given some books to choose from - "Biggles, the Famous Five and Just William." They're not quite to his taste, but to pass the time he reads some of Biggles Investigates.

It was really good, Dot — an easy, enjoyable read with plenty of laugh-out-loud episodes and a few very moving ones as well. I'll probably be getting a copy for myself some time. I've been to Scilly once, though only for a couple of days, and that book has made me sure I definitely want to visit again! :D

Jennings at large (Anthony Buckeridge). This is a break with the usual school setting as the main story takes place in the holidays.
I didn't like it so much the first time I read it as it seemed too different, but I have enjoyed it this time.

Started re-reading the sequel to "Emil and the Detectives" by German children's book author Erich Kaestner last night, it's called "Emil and the Three Twins" (1934). The location is the Baltic Sea in Germany.

Just ordered this book from ebay for £3.95.
It's a 1986 reprint of the 1898 original.

The original is out of copy-write and can be downloaded electronically.

Looks interesting Pete. If the stories were already forgotten in 1898 then they must really be old.

Great author, Chrissie - but I have never heard of this book (sounds interesting - three twins!).

I'm currently reading Obstacles to Young Love, a 2010 comic novel by David Nobbs.

I agree with Eddie. Most of Father Brown stories are considered good to great detective stories, Francis. Happy reading! :D

I started to read (mostly at work) a book of German mythology and sagas (like Nibelungen). It's quite interesting in parts, explaining how some Christian holidays and other elements have their origin from the Nordic mythologies, or seeing elements of the King Arthur saga (which is not part of this book) appearing there as well.

Coincidentally I'm reading The Secret of Father Brown at the moment, the fourth collection of stories. I like the way he is more concerned with spiritual and philosophical truths rather than the logical reasoning of Sherlock Holmes. Superb stories.

Nancy at Saint Brides by Dorita Fairlie Bruce 2002 Girls Gone By reprint.
There's a bit more vocabulary in this and I suspect the remainder of this series than I'm used to but I'm rather enjoying this not least Nancy's dares for the approval of ones dorm chums which was very much life at 14 as I recall it.
