I'm re-reading my collection of D E Stevenson, began with the charming ANNA AND HER DAUGHTERS and have just started in on a 2 parter, VITTORIA COTTAGE and its sequel MUSIC IN THE HILLS, the perfect choices for a night in by the fireside!
"Its a magic wood!" said Fanny suddenly.

It was a nuisance. An adventure was one thing - but an adventure without anything to eat was quite another thing. That wouldn't do at all. (The Valley of Adventure)

We've got a Jane Austen thread elsewhere in the Other Authors section, if you're interested. Do you like her other books as well? P&P is probably my favourite if I absolutely had to pick, but they all have something special about them.

I started to read Christopher Paolini's Eragon in German. Some may know the film, but I haven't watched it yet (though I think I've seen parts of it when I recorded it more than 7 years ago)

I definitely read Jill Investigates as a child - and Jill at Hazelmere. Sadly, I only read them once and can't remember anything at all about them! Hope you enjoy Jill Investigates, Joanne!

A Man Lay Dead, by Ngaio Marsh. A truly authentic country-house murder, although not quite in Agatha Christie's class, in my opinion.

I'm reading an excellent book at the moment. Its called Caraval by Stephanie Garber. I'm absolutely loving it!! Its funny because although its been ages since I've read an Enid Blyton book, this reminds me quite a lot of The Land of Far Beyond and I suppose it reminds me a bit of Alice In Wonderland , too. Anyway, just thought I'd recommend it.

Thank you so much for letting us know, Poppy. I have read the synopsis of the book and some reviews. The book is right up my alley. Done downloading the ebook version.

Re: What other author are you reading at the moment?
Jill at Hazelmere (Valerie Hastings) 1965 Children's Press hardback. Well I suppose you just knew I'd re-read this.
There are a number of things going on, one being the school being loaned on a grace and favour basis land for sports and recreation that the landowner having fallen on hard times has had to sell off to new owners who don't wish at the outset to resume the arrangements with the school.
There's the business of what could be described as a falling apart sports pavilion that is badly damaged by storms to which the schoolgirls organize a show to raise funds except someone has stolen the stencilled (remember doing stencilling on the typewriter anyone?) sketches Jill and Nina had prepared which provides the mystery part of this story.
The third theme is a bit sadder in that Lindy was feeling very down and homesick so has little enthusiasm for anything be they lessons or extra curricular activity, sneaking off to find company but making herself look more like a young woman that gets her in trouble, even trying to run away. It transpires she's getting little real company at home, the one girl who filled that gap at school had left and really she needed some tlc.
