Smith's Noddy Alarm Clock

Post by Rob Houghton »

I won this Noddy clock today on eBay - £22.00.

This isn't the actual photo of the one I won, but its exactly the same.

Something else to add to my 'one off Blyton items' collection! ;-)

Well done, Rob! :D

Thanks Sixret. :-D No - never had the Noddy alarm clock before. I did buy the Famous Five pocket watch at the beginning of the year. :-D

Was it the first prize? £22 seems rather a lot to enter a competition...

A good purchase Rob - sorry if you've mentioned it,but is it a wind up clock or is it battery powered?
As a watch collector,I wonder how accurately it keeps time too?

That's what they call it on eBay, Nigel. :?

Yes Pete - its a wind-up alarm clock, with animated Noddy - his head nods in time to the tick. It's supposedly from the 1960's...although later versions were produced, but I think mine is the original. It keeps good time, according to the seller - but only goes for about 10 hours, as it never fully unwinds apparently. There are Noddy alarm clocks in better working order that go for 24 hours - but given the cheap price (£22 is very cheap for these clocks!) I thought it was a good deal. :-)

Thanks Rob - It may be able to be serviced and then keep time for it's maximum potential.
A clock repair shop or online site would be able to give a fairly accurate guide price for such work.

The price of Noddy clocks appears quite steady. I bought one of those iconic timepieces in 2009 and it cost almost exactly the same as Rob's recent acquisition (£22.00) taking into account a 'slight' inflationary aspect.

Now, I wonder how much Tony's cost him. You can see it in those photographs taken when Ming Khan visited the Fabulous Cave. A Noddy clock is on the shelf right of Tony's face and as Ming's standing roughly in the same spot, it's also to her right - up top.

That pile of 'Cave' photos available round the time of Enid Blyton Day 2007 shows it as well, amongst a wonderful collection of Blyton memorabilia. The clock is in front of a large 'Enid Blyton's Journey Through Fairyland' something or other. I'd never heard of a book by that name so maybe it's a jig-saw puzzle - and Moonraker's bound to know whether this is true or not because he's actually visited the Cave.

The 'Journey Through Fairyland' is a game - the first ever game based on Enid Blyton books. :-D

I think my Noddy clock was a bit cheaper than most I've seen. usually they're around £40 - but I guess it depends on the quality. Mine has a couple of 'minor chips to the paint' on the back and a slight scratch on the face - but I just wanted one for my collection, and this one was nearer my price-range than a more expensive one! :-D

My Noddy clock arrived today - here it is.

The alarm works well, and Noddy's head nods in time to the tick - very pleased with it! :-D

That's excellent, Rob — a great buy. I wouldn't mind one of those myself, if it wasn't for the fact that I can't stand having a ticking clock by my bed when I'm trying to sleep, which sort of defeats the point of it being an alarm clock! :P

It would be worth your while taking it to a clock repairer, as Pete suggested, to see if they can fix the short running time and give it a general service.

It was a nuisance. An adventure was one thing - but an adventure without anything to eat was quite another thing. That wouldn't do at all. (The Valley of Adventure)
