Quick - before it disappears again!

Post by Katharine »

The article in my local paper has reappeared - can't guarantee how long it will stay there!

Interesting article - I particularly liked the school photo - great stuff!

I did notice one error - Enid intended to write eight Famous Five books...when in fact she'd only intended to write six! ;-)
'Oh voice of Spring of Youth
hearts mad delight,
Sing on, sing on, and when the sun is gone
I'll warm me with your echoes
through the night.'

It is a pity that nobody seems to spell Malory Towers correctly, it is wrong in most cases! A nice article though.

75 years now. I remember the exhibition for 70 years at the EB Day.
Funnily enough, my brother jokingly referred to "Mallory Towers" in a text yesterday (as we had been discussing schools earlier). I just managed to resist the urge to correct him !

I see the article makes a reference to the "adult" books. A good article nevertheless.

Thanks for posting a link to the article, Katharine. I always think Seckford Hall looks magnificent. Enid Blyton must have been overjoyed to go and stay there with the Hunt family.

I like Liz Nice's comment: "I reckon it’s down to those books [the Famous Five series] that I still see every day as a potential adventure rather than a drudge."

And I couldn't help chuckling at this: "Inevitably, over the years, the books have been accused of being class-ridden, racist and sexist and have been generally mocked but they strike a chord with children and children who loved them seem unscarred by their affection for the Five – some are feminists and even socialists."

"There is no bond like the bond of having read and liked the same books."

Thank you for the link, Katharine. The photo reminds me of The Other film!

A nice little article Katharine. Thanks for posting it. I too loved the school photo. How sad to think they will all have left us by now. I hope they had nice lives.
