I think The Secret Mountain is about to go up in value, even in paperback, and there will be all kinds of tatty copies for sale for humongous amounts, now that it's no longer being published.

hearts mad delight,
Sing on, sing on, and when the sun is gone
I'll warm me with your echoes
through the night.'

Yes,I agree and I think removing the worn out dustjackets completely would make the books more attractive somehow.

The sad, torn, scrappy covers don't really make you desire to have those books on your shelves.

Don't worry, Katharine, as I've said before, a book is only worth what you want to pay for it.

I've picked up some good bargains, and I know I've paid over the odds for a particular book I've really wanted. It's swings and roundabouts. And as I always say now since having cancer, there are no pockets in shrouds. If you really want something, go and get it, if it makes you happy. :)

Good point Julie. I think if it had been a copy of something like The Valley of Adventure, which is a book I love, I may well have bought it.

+ £10 postage...

Try to google the book, maybe some other sites will offer it cheaper. When Sönke mentioned it in another thread some time ago, I googled and found an offer I took. It wasn't what I consider cheap, but knowing that there aren't many copies around I bought it.

Now that's a book I'd have happily paid £10 for. Not sure it's worth £90 though.

Well, originally the Famous Five stage play book cost £19.50 so I would think anything between about £30 and £50 would be acceptable for something that's pretty scarce...

That's one book I don't plan on selling! :-)

Quite right, Julie. If I see a book I really want and it's priced slightly higher than I expected, I'll buy it. I won't pay silly money but I would go a few extra pounds for a book to complete a set, for example.

Look at this... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/The-Island-of ... SwHnFV5dcP" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

£75 for a first edition with no dust jacket?! I've got a first edition with no DJ in just as good condition myself... maybe I should be making some money out of it?

It was a nuisance. An adventure was one thing - but an adventure without anything to eat was quite another thing. That wouldn't do at all. (The Valley of Adventure)

That's a lot of money for no jacket!

I wouldn't pay that price I must admit.

There are also several copies with dust jackets going for upwards of £500, all from Stella & Rose of course...
