Thanks, Pete. 'The Ship in the Bottle' is an interesting story and Marjorie L. Davies' illustrations are great. As a child I understood Philip's longing for a ship in a bottle when I read The Ship of Adventure and was delighted when Lucy-Ann bought him one.

Would you like to have a ship in a bottle, Anita?

It was after reading 'The Ship of Adventure' that I bought my first ever ship in a bottle, about 20 years ago! :-D

Maybe one of these days, but we'd have nowhere to put one at the moment! There are certain things I always stop to admire in stately homes or antique shops - ships in bottles (not commonly found), grandfather clocks (and ornate mantelpiece clocks) and old wooden chests like the ones used by pirates. Also tables etc. featuring marquetry.

Gosh-a-roonie, I thought that bloke sounded oddly Australian, and then I realised — it's Rob from The Curiosity Show! :D That used to be on TV when I was really little.

Thanks to Pete for the story and Sixret for the video. I had read somewhere years ago how they make a ship in a bottle, so the ending of the story wasn't a surprise, but it was a nice one to read and possibly cleared up that mystery for a lot of Enid's readers!

I would love to own a ship in a bottle too, but don't have any need for one now. One day, when I have a house of my own with lots of seaside-themed decor (as I wish I could), maybe I'll find a nice old ship in a bottle to add to it. 8)

Meanwhile, out of interest, here are some on eBay, from genuine antiques to make-your-own kits for the kiddies...

Here's a few variations on the theme of a ship in a bottle...

Haha - he and the other host were two of my lecturers at teacher's college.
