Happy Christmas to everyone

Post by Sally H »

We will be heading off for Christmas tomorrow and I just wanted to wish everyone a very happy Christmas. I haven't managed to spend much time on the Forums this year but hope to remedy this next year and catch up with some much loved and well read Blytons!

Look forward to seeing old friends and new in May at Exbury Gardens.

Can't exactly day Happy Christmas right now but I'll definitely do on the 25th!!! One of the most specials day of the year, a time of new hope, light, and joy and a time for remembering the birth of Jesus Christ. Also Christmas traditions are just really nice too. :D

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to everyone!

No, I always say "Merry Christmas" - "Happy" is reserved for the New Year greeting. :D

It was a nuisance. An adventure was one thing - but an adventure without anything to eat was quite another thing. That wouldn't do at all. (The Valley of Adventure)

I feel like in the UK when I was a child, people usually said "Happy Christmas". "Merry Christmas" was more common in the USA. But it looks like "Merry Christmas" has been spreading in the UK.

Yet in Dickens' Christmas stories, 'Merry Christmas' seems to be the usual salutation. It was certainly always 'Merry Christmas' when I were but a lad, back in the 50s. I have noticed that many cards now say Merry Christmas and Happy New Year (see Courtenay's illustration above), leaving out the indefinite article. That seems awkward to me.
