'The Likely Lads' was one of the first TV series I remember - Rodney Bewes and James Dolan were a great double act. It must have been the same era as 'The Marriage Lines' with Prunella Scales and Richard Briers.

I think it was a bit later than 'The marriage Lines'.

Yes it was, Daisy. The first sit-com I can remember is Meet The Wife with Thora Hird and Freddie Frinton.

The Likely Lads was 1964 - 1968. :D

The first sit-coms I remember watching as a kid were The Liver-birds and George and Mildred.

Sing on, sing on, and when the sun is gone
I'll warm me with your echoes
through the night.'

I didn't realise that 'The Marriage Lines'' started in 1961(!). Prunella Scales must be quite mature by now.

Prunella is 85 now. We have enjoyed watching the canal journeys she and her husband Timothy West have been taking. Sad that she is suffering from dementia... but still seems to function reasonably well.

The earliest sit-com I can remember was 'Friends and Neighbours' in 1954. It starred Peter Butterworth and his real-life wife, Janet Brown, as Mr. and Mrs. Bird, and Benny Lee and Avril Angers as Mr. and Mrs. Honeybee. It was written by Sid Colin and Talbot Rothwell. The four actors had previously appeared together in 1951's "How Do You View?", a sketch show starring Terry Thomas. (He always began each show by looking directly at the camera - and thus the viewer - and saying, "Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. How do you view? Do you? Oh, good show!"

Well, I was 'only' born in 1971! ;-)

I was watching Timothy West a few days ago in 'Royal Jelly', an episode from Tales of the Unexpected. I had seen it before and wasn't all that keen - but if you're in the right mood, it's a downright creepy little story!

Didn't they show repeats in the 70s, then?

Bear in mind I was only about 4 or 5 when I remember the Liver-Birds and George and Mildred...as I said, they were the first I remember. I don't think my parents ever watched The Likely lads and so I only watched what they watched!

I loved watching Laurel and Hardy on TV. I'm not sure what the point you're making is? :? I was just talking about the first sit-coms I remembered watching! :D I did also watch repeats!

I also used to like Old Mother Riley! :-D
