Not unexpected, but still a sad loss.

He was perfectly cast as Norman Clegg and helped Summer Wine to become one of the great sitcoms (yes, I know it then outstayed its welcome).

He also showed himself to be a fine voice actor in Wind in the Willows and particularly Wallace and Gromit. It also speaks wonders for him that he agreed to help out Nick Park when he was a student by voicing Wallace at all.

RIP Peter Sallis.

I think I first became aware of him when he starred in the BBC tv series, "The Diary of Samuel Pepys" in 1958.

Yes, RIP Peter Sallis. He was in an episode of The Avengers, shown last night. A versatile actor.

RIP Peter Sallis. I only knew him as the voice of Wallace, but that alone is pure comedy gold. ("Cracking toast, Gromit!")

What a shame! Peter Sallis was a fav of mine. R.I.P. Cleggy!

Such sad news first knew him as Norman Cleggy" Clegg in Last of The Summer Wine, which personally I feel didn't outstay it's welcome. More after Bill Owen (Compo my favourite character) died and the other original cast members became less able, they just couldn't recapture the chemistry from the earlier series's. In fact he Norman Clegg was the first character we meet in Last of The Summer Wines pilot "Of Fish and Funerals" Farewell Peter and Cleggy, RIP you will be missed but fondly remembered.

The thing about Last Of The Summer Wine outstaying its welcome, is that while I wasn't a fan, I greatly admired a show that could claim to be the longest running sitcom in the world. I might tune in, see some bizarre antics and strange lines that I didn't understand, but it clearly kept the audience amused, and it really wouldn't have bothered me if it had carried on indefinitely to the present day. Harmless, record breaking Sunday night viewing!

On the other hand, if I had been a fan perhaps I might have wanted it to end if I felt it had passed its peak. I'm afraid I felt that about Doctor Who years ago!
