I used to chew the top of pens until I did something similar. I was in biology class, bored one afternoon and was chewing the top of a pen when I got a sudden taste of this awful liquid. I'd absentmindedly chewed this pen up so much there was a hole in it and somehow I'd made the ink shoot up and swallowed it . I was scared stiff as I'd heard you can die from ink poisoning but I didn't dare ask the teacher if I could get a cup of water incase she asked why! It put me off chewing the base for life but I've never broken the habit of chewing the lid once it's put on the base. Some in my class would chew the lid on its own through a lesson, I couldn't do that for fear of choking on it .

Rob, that looks more like a clutch pencil as it has a 'button' at the top.

Who would have thought that such a simple thing would cause such problems?! It seems that the propelling pencil I once had (and now can't find!!) was the only propelling pencil in existence with a cap!! I had presumed they were much more common than they apparently are, and now I am stuck with a propelling pencil with a cap in my story that is difficult to alter.

Yes - thank you! That's very similar to the one I had! i was reading up on propelling pencils, and I believe 'mechanical pencil' is just another name for them - supposedly from America.

Edit: it does, at least on my browser, must have been the ü that did it!
