I wonder if it's because it's not a letter of the English alphabet so something in the computer couldn't identify it and read it as an error in the link?

As far as I know the "ü" isn't defined as a valid symbol (or at least used to), because it's not a valid letter in many languages. It should be avoided in URLs, although it does work on local pages (not internet-connected pages).

The forum doesn't like links ending with ) either. The links to some Wikipedia articles end with ) and they cause a problem.
