Re: Christmas Customs
Never take the decorations down until 12th Night (6th Jan) - although occasionally I start putting some away the day before - but the majority stay up until the 6th. It's traditional. I don't really like the modern way of taking them down just after New Year.

Sing on, sing on, and when the sun is gone
I'll warm me with your echoes

Re: Christmas Customs
If I was thinking of taking them down early, it wouldn't be until tonight, as tomorrow everyone goes back to working again, but as my daughter doesn't go back to school until Thursday, I still feel it is the Christmas holidays. I suppose I won't really feel I've got normality until next week though, as then everyone will be back to a full week at work/school, and all the activities like dancing lessons will resume.Moonraker wrote:We love it! Re: Christmas Customs
Our two grandsons return to school tomorrow. We have kept our decorations up for them, but will be taking them down in the morning. Like you, Nigel, we'll welcome normality again.
'Go down to the side-shows by the river this afternoon. I'll meet you somewhere in disguise. Bet you won't know me!' wrote Fatty.

Re: Christmas Customs
Our decorations came down today as I'm back at work tomorrow.
"It's the ash! It's falling!" yelled Julian, almost startling Dick out of his wits...
"Listen to its terrible groans and creaks!" yelled Julian, almost beside himself with impatience.

Re: Christmas Customs
We've returned intact and unscathed from the ski slopes all ready to enjoy the last couple of days of our Christmas decs - usually put them up around the end of Nov so we have bags of time to enjoy them to the full, dress the heavenly pine scented tree and wreaths and make a daily teatime ritual of opening the cards and putting them up, why do things by halves.... We've taken them down on the 6th forever, its pleasant to have everything back to normal in some ways, but equally love the process of getting everything up and running the next time round, many of our lovely things given by loved ones no longer with us, so doubly precious - I have some sympathy for people who keep their decorations up all year round, but seems to me there's not the same enjoyment or excitement in the process of prepping for the festivities
"Its a magic wood!" said Fanny suddenly.

If we stuck with tradition, we'd be riding horses and lighting our homes with gaslight.

It was a nuisance. An adventure was one thing - but an adventure without anything to eat was quite another thing. That wouldn't do at all. (The Valley of Adventure)

I didn't put any decorations or a tree up this year, mainly because I live by myself and haven't had the time or see the point of it. Yes, Bah Humbug!

Re: Christmas Customs
Well I normally wait until the 6th but I won't be in tomorrow or Friday and I'm certainly not leaving them until Saturday as its bad luck, so my tree and decorations have had to come down this morning and are now packed away in a box in the loft again for another 11 months . The room looks awful and bare now, I know it's going to take days to get used to it again, it always does. I hate taking the tree down as it removes the very last bit of Christmas spirit and seems so final. A thoroughly gloomy job, though I had to smile when the chinchilla was round my feet trying to grab the lights and tinsel and anything else she could reach as I was removing them .

HAPPY EPIPHANY!!!
Feliz Día de Reyes !!!
Hope you are all having a wonderful day!
I am really pleased with what the wise men gave me and kind of sad to think I missed the parade yesterday evening, although I have pictures of it!

Oh yes, today is Epiphany! I hope you're having a good day, María Esther! I remembered this morning when I saw my Spanish friends posting what they had received from the wise men!

Re: Christmas Customs
In England, the holiday is called "Twelfth Night". Or maybe technically the night before the sixth of January is so called. Anyway, the next Monday (this year the ninth, therefore) is "Plough Monday".
