Better than counting sheep...

Post by Pauline »

Last night I just couldn't sleep at all, so lay there trying to remember as many names of mistresses and girls at Malory Towers and St Clare's as possible and to picture them in my head...began to get mixed up after a while and dropped off to sleep....The Land of Dreams....Does anyone else do this sort of thing?

If I tried that I would probably just fail to remember someone's name and become so irritated that I would have to get up and go to the book to look it up. Otherwise it would drive me mad.

That would be me too!

hearts mad delight,
Sing on, sing on, and when the sun is gone
I'll warm me with your echoes

That would be me also. I just can't sleep if that is the case. I must get up and find the info.

I more usually play the alphabet game — pick a topic, like names of towns in Britain or suburbs of Melbourne (where I used to live), and come up with at least one for each letter of the alphabet until I fall asleep. (I rarely get anywhere near Z.) I suppose one could do that with Blyton character names... :D

It was a nuisance. An adventure was one thing - but an adventure without anything to eat was quite another thing. That wouldn't do at all. (The Valley of Adventure)

I have tried that sort of thing and I just wind myself up when I can't think of a name or item. Or I get distracted and think my way to something else and then lie awake thinking too hard.
"It's the ash! It's falling!" yelled Julian, almost startling Dick out of his wits...
"Listen to its terrible groans and creaks!" yelled Julian, almost beside himself with impatience.

I did get a bit wound up trying to think of who was where, so might not try it again....

I sometimes think of a set of Blyton characters and try to make up a new story about them... I haven't yet dreamed up any brilliant plot that way, but I do drop off quite quickly.

I like to make lists of things, and one of my favourites is all the things I would take to the Secret Island if I were running away! :D

The other thing I do is play the alphabet game, lots of Enid Blyton scope there.

I don't think anything would bug me enough to make me get up and look it up. I'm far too lazy!
