Amazing Libraries
http://www.studentbeans.com/student101/ ... -4277.html
I would love to spend my days in one of these libraries! My favourites are the Bodleian, Trinity College Library, Rijksmuseum Research Library and Strahov Theological Hall. I'm not too fond of the Stuttgart City Library, though, it reminds me more of a disinfected sanatorium rather than a library. While the others emanate a warm and inviting glow this one feels cold and uninviting to me.

They look rather more impressive than Guildford Library! My daughter works for Sussex College in Cambrige University so perhaps I might be able to see the Cambridge one.

Re: Amazing Libraries
Aren't the Oxbridge libraries open to the public? I know I've visited the Bodleian but then my uncle took us there, and he is an alum.

Wow, they all look pretty impressive. I wonder if there are any Blyton's amongst those many books!
Julian gave an exclamation and nudged George.

I liked the look of all the old fashioned ones. I didn't notice any books in the Vatican one though! Julie, it would be lovely to think there might be some Blyton's tucked away on those shelves, but sadly I doubt it. I wonder if any of them resemble Tony's Cave for grandeur?

Re: Amazing Libraries
This is one of my favourite libraries
It is in the Glasgow School of Art and like the rest of the school it was designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh.

"It's the ash! It's falling!" yelled Julian, almost startling Dick out of his wits...
"Listen to its terrible groans and creaks!" yelled Julian, almost beside himself with impatience.

It looks very pretty, Fiona!
Katharine, I noticed that about the Vatican too. Perhaps this is a different part of the library?

Re: Amazing Libraries
I spent many, many hours in the Bodleian, but not the pretty version in Oxford. I was about six miles out of Oxford at Nuneham Courtenay which is where all the children's books are stored. Surrounded by thousands of children's books I was like a kid in a candy store. I used to get there at 8.00 in the morning when it opened and I stayed there until it closed at 4.00. I had a great many of these eight hour sessions.

Re: Amazing Libraries
Wonderful link, Ming, thanks for sharing. Some of those rooms are simply amazing. I wouldn't get any work done for ages, I would simply sit and enjoy the surroundings! I love the globes and the ceiling of the library in Prague... The Long Room in the Trinity College Library in Dublin is stunning, too.

The Long Room in Trinity, Dublin is absolutely amazing. I could spend hours there. Although it isn't as big as it looks in the picture. The Queen went there when she visited Dublin. The library in Prague looks stunning too. I was there a few years ago but never thought of visiting a library, I wish i'd known about it.

I love the look of the Long Room in Trinity College, Dublin, too. It exudes peace and calm, heritage and learning, awe and wonder.

Re: Amazing Libraries
Oh wow, they all look lovely! Our library at Uni, from the outside, looks like an airport terminal from the 1970s that they forgot to finish, urgh.

The Long Room was probably my favourite too.
Tony, your days in the children's library sound great - tell us more please.
I'm trying to picture our main library. The building itself is probably Victorian, but inside it's just a modern library. I've never noticed any original features, apart from the lovely wooden staircase.

Re: Amazing Libraries
Now I'm having library envy. To be amoung so many books in such beautiful places. I mean, wowa!
It really puts my university library and the libraries where I work into perspective!
I must say, when I visited Aberdeen University, I was VERY excited by their new library.
I took this picture of the inside. I was so excited by this library, just ask Fiona!
