Dear old Ms Maloney obviously wasn't trained in the politically correct era, then (though it was the late 2000s when I was in her classes)! :P But as I said, her heart was in the right place. My best friend at school and I used to joke that she obviously liked us by the time we'd finished VCE [A-level] English and Literature, as we were getting fewer and fewer red marks on our essays towards the end!

It was a nuisance. An adventure was one thing - but an adventure without anything to eat was quite another thing. That wouldn't do at all. (The Valley of Adventure)

We were also encouraged not to put a cross by any answers - just give the correct answer and only use ticks, not crosses.

I remember having 'see me!' written on a few of my pages, and also 'date!!??' if I forgot the date. Also 'this is not good enough!!'.
I saw a lot of my old Divinity teacher, Sr Valeria, in recent years and reminded her of all the essays returned with the comment "See me" in the margin (in red ink)... she giggled and apologised all those years later, but to this day she corrects my letters and e-mails with such comments as "It wasn't St Fiacre, patron saint of gardeners, statue in the silent garden but St Francis, check facts" - at least there's no margin for the dreaded 2 words of yore...........
"Its a magic wood!" said Fanny suddenly.

Sorry for continuing the off topic discussion, but I'm surprised than red ink isn't encouraged anymore. That's certainly not the case in India, for quite a few of my assignment have 'See me' / '?' / 'Incomplete' etc. written on them in red. :x :x :( :) :)
