I was checking the flight map on the screen as we went and I'm afraid we did mostly go over the Indian Ocean, probably because we were heading for Melbourne, which is in the south-east. We just sort of brushed past the very southern tip of India — the nearest city to our flight path (as far as the map showed) was the resoundingly named Thiruvananthapuram. 8) Anyway, it was night by then and I was spending most of that time sleeping as best I could!

I won't ask why. :shock: :wink: All large airports are pretty much the same as far as I've ever seen — even when I got to Melbourne Airport this morning, it didn't really feel like I was back in Australia until I was out in the suburbs and could see all the gum trees and hear the magpies singing. :D (No, they're no relation to northern hemisphere magpies, but are large and black and white, hence the name. Here's what they look and sound like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oYEYc8Ge3nw" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; The chirping and screeching in the background is probably a bunch of lorikeets!)

Oops, well I certainly didn’t mean to post something so provocative and run! Last thing I posted was that I’d given Brodie a dummy and I’ve only just seen the resulting debate.

I’m obviously a fan of dummies! I think there’s nothing wrong with them providing they’re not used for too long - and they’re better than thumbs as thumbs can’t be removed. I’ve also seen some young thumb suckers with terrible cracked sore thumbs from them always being wet. Brodie only has his to help him sleep or keep him settled in the car or pram. Babies like to suck for comfort and as a breastfeeding mum it is great that he will suck on something other than me! It means his dad can do more for him and he can be look after by his grandparents.

The NHS is fairly neutral on dummies, they point out that they can reduce the risk of SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome) but can affect teeth and speech if used for too long. My health visitor was encouraging about using one - and I think as a parent you have to do what you have to do to get through. What’s worse - a baby who cries all day long and leaves you exhausted and miserable or a baby who sucks a dummy and has a small risk of maybe having slightly wonky teeth if you don’t manage to get it away from them early enough?

Anyway - right now I am feeding him and hoping to get him into his bed soon. Then I’ll be off to bed because I am very tired (as usual!)
"It's the ash! It's falling!" yelled Julian, almost startling Dick out of his wits...
"Listen to its terrible groans and creaks!" yelled Julian, almost beside himself with impatience.

We're both still alive, Courtenay, sometimes that's all you can aim for! :lol:

Right now I'm quite shocked about the fact how few books are read and owned by British and American children:

https://www.theguardian.com/books/2011/ ... n-no-books" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Scroll down to "Surprising Book Facts":

http://www.robertbrewer.org/surprising- ... fographic/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I wonder if it's due to the fact that less and less books are published in book form, but instead on e-books?

What a shame that they miss out on such a wonderful and absorbing pastime, somehow i-pads, computers and so on never seem just the same as reading a book, with that particular delight of the smell of paper and the written words of the story unfolding as you turn the pages, a screen of any variety doesn't match up! Still, as independent bookshops are making a come-back perhaps the tide will turn...

Floragord, I wish the independent books stores would make a comeback here in the US as well! :(
Unless we drive all the way up to Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH, there's no large independent book store near where we live.
Barnes & Noble killed most of the smaller independent book stores. :evil:

Hope you get on okay and like what you see of Birmingham! Parts of it are very nice! :-D

I'll be restrained and only share one, Sixret. Otherwise I'll get my hand slapped for grinding the forums to a halt with the three million (approx) photos I have of him...

https://imgur.com/a/U9Kqh" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Sorry, can't get the image to post as I just get an error "It was not possible to determine the dimensions of the image." Tinypic kept uploading it sideways despite it being the right way around on my laptop, Photobucket I assume are still refusing to show images unless you've paid? So I give up, it never used to be so hard to share a flipping photo!! :evil: :evil: :evil:

Edit: and even though it WAS the right way up on Tinypic, the link takes you to it sideways. So you'll just have to turn your computer on its side.

Edit edit: https://imgur.com/a/a94EY" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; this one might work. I don't know. I'm tired. I'm going to bed.
