The Enid Blyton Society

Quite an interesting post, timv. There are big chunks of masonry that lay beneath the outer side of Corfe Castle, which tumbled down the banking during the demolition of the Castle after the Civil war. They can be seen from the footpath that runs around the West side of the Castle, although a bit overgrown with vegetation!
I think Enid mentioned that 'Parts of Faynights Castle walls had tumbled down the banking' in Five have a Wonderful time, which she may have wrote about after recalling what she had seen at Corfe Castle.

The photo of Corfe Castle below, always reminds me of Enid's description of the 'Big broken arch' at Kirrin Castle in Treasure island.

That would be my opinion also. And I too feel that Corfe has more in common with Faynights Castle than Kirrin Castle. Nevertheless when I visited Corfe Castle a few years ago I much enjoyed spending an hour tucked into a half ruined turret reading Five on a Treasure Island.

Here's something of interest I stumbled across earlier today — the Royal Geographic Society has digitised some films of expeditions made in the early 20th century to places like Mt Everest and the Libyan desert: Britain's great explorations now online A reminder of how much courage and ingenuity it took for these young men to venture into regions that at that time were almost inaccessible or else hardly known to the wider world.

Fascinating - you can imagine Enid reading about these explorations in the newspapers.

A selection of the films will be shown this afternoon at 4.30 BST on BBC News Channel (possibly available abroad?)

Yes, I was also thinking Enid probably read about some of those expeditions when they happened, although most of her own stories (apart from the Adventure series) don't feature journeys to far-off countries, let alone largely unexplored regions. I guess she preferred to stick mainly with settings she knew well. But of course plenty of other authors in that time were inspired by real-life explorations and adventures like these ones.
