Kirsty MacColl — They Don't Know... which I knew as Tracey Ullman's theme song for Tracey Takes On..., but this is the first time I've heard the original. Very cool. 8)

Interestingly, Kirsty McColl is one of the backing singers on Tracey Ullman's version and it is she who sings
'bay-ay-be-ee' in the middle of the record (as she does on her own recording).

I've always liked both versions but prefer Kirsty MacColl's. Tracey Ullman's version is fun but Kirsty sings with more feeling.

I also love Kirsty MacColl's cover of Days by The Kinks:

Yes, I read that while looking up a bit more about the song — Tracey couldn't reach the really high note, so Kirsty was asked to fill in that bit. Great live version of Days, too — thanks, Anita.

Solomon Burke - Down in the Valley

https://www.dropshots.com/Domino43/date ... 5/22:47:38" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

He was born James Solomon McDonald in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1940. He began recording in 1955, but it was only after signing with Atlantic Records that he had his first hits.
'Down in the Valley' only made No: 71 in the Hot Hundred. It was originally issued as the B side to 'I'm Hanging Up My Heart for You'. He is credited with having invented the term 'soul music' and was known as 'The King of Rock 'n' Soul'. He died in 1990 on board a plane at Amsterdam Airport, having flown to give a performance in the Netherlands, apparently having disregarded medical advice not to do so.

Glen Gray and the Casa Loma Orchestra - Casa Loma Stomp

https://www.dropshots.com/Domino43/date ... 1/11:49:39" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Strictly speaking, the Casa Loma Orchestra was a collective (it was formally incorporated as a corporation in 1930 with all its musicians as board members and shareholders) but, by 1933, its saxophonist, Glen Gray, had emerged as its de facto leader.
Gray was born Glen Gray Knoblauch in 1900 in Roanoke, Illinois. He played in several local orchestras before forming the Orange Blossoms in 1927; they changed their name to the Casa Loma Orchestra after a residency at the Casa Loma Hotel in Toronto, Canada. The orchestra effectively set the musical style that the swing bands were later to follow. Glen Gray died from lymphoma in 1963.

Here's a great rock 'n' roll instrumental from drummer Sandy Nelson: Teen Beat. It reached number 9 in the UK charts at the end of 1959 and number 4 in the USA.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=llJ5zy0zITw" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Sandy Nelson was born on 1st December 1938 in Santa Monica, California. Before having hits with Teen Beat (which was a million seller), Let There Be Drums, Drums Are My Beat and Drummin' Up A Storm, Sandy worked as a session drummer for some of America's top musical acts. Near the end of 1963, he was in a motorcycle accident.The injuries necessitated amputation of his right foot and part of that leg. Nonetheless, he continued to record into the early 1970s, releasing two or three albums a year, consisting of cover versions of popular hits plus a few original compositions. Sandy, who is now 79, is still drumming up a storm across the USA.

I liked how the traditional melodies were blended in that 1989 hit.
