Glad you liked it, Eddie. I first found that I liked big band music in 1954, when the film, "The Glenn Miller Story" came out, but I didn't see it until it was shown on television much later. However, it did result in his records being played on radio with 'Moonlight Serenade' (the original 1939 version) being re-released and getting to No: 12 in the UK charts. When I started buying LPs in 1964, I bought one by Glenn Miller, followed by Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, Tommy Dorsey and Charlie Barnet. After that, I was hooked. I graduated from swing into jazz and my collection grew. Of course, LPs were not too expensive at that time and most of this kind of music was on budget labels.

Interestingly, the original US 78 released in August 1936 of Benny Goodman's "There's a Small Hotel" was backed by Tommy Dorsey's "That's a-Plenty".

I too am a Glenn Miller fan, Dave, and have seen The Glenn Miller Story a couple of times: once at the pictures in the 1950s and again on television. A great film. Like you I also like Artie Shaw, Tommy Dorsey and Charlie Barnet.

There's nothing quite like driving down the M4 in the early hours listening to the best of Steeleye Span on the car stereo!

Charlie Barnet - Between 18th. and 19th. on Chestnut Street

Charlie Barnet was born in New York City in 1913. His parents divorced when he was only two and he lived with his mother and her parents. His grandfather was Charles Daly, a wealthy banker and businessman. They wanted him to become a lawyer, but he chose to become a musician. He became proficient on tenor sax, alto sax, soprano sax, and trumpet. He was a great admirer of Duke Ellington and played chimes on the Duke's 1930 record, "Ring Dem Bells". He formed his own orchestra in 1932. He was not really successful until 1939, when he became one of the major swing bands. He died in 1991.
Mary Ann McCall was born in Philadelphia in 1919. She had briefly sung with Woody Herman's Orchestra in 1939 before joining Charlie Barnet. She later sang with Tommy Dorsey and rejoined Woody Herman, 1946-49. She died in 1994.

Pleased you enjoyed it, Pete and Eddie. There is a British cover of that song recorded in 1940 by Harry Roy's Orchestra on which Harry Roy takes the vocal himself.
