I've just been listening to There's One Thing More by the Allisons from 1961. It was the B-side of their number 2 hit Are You Sure, which was our 1961 Eurovision Song Contest entry. It came second in the competition and eventually reached the same position in all the pop charts with the exception of the NME chart where it made the number one spot on 22nd April 1961. The B-side of the single was every bit as good as the A-side, which I think was our best ever Eurovision entry.

A masterpiece from my favourite English composer: Ralph Vaughan Williams — Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis This is a particularly wonderful recording (Andrew Davis conducting the BBC Symphony Orchestra) in Gloucester Cathedral, where the Fantasia was first performed in 1910.

I just listened to an excerpt of "The Alan Parsons' Symphonic project - Live in Colombia", the last song is "Old and wise" which I like quite a lot. I wasn't too happy with Luciferama though, a combination of two songs. I personally think that "Gregorians did a better edition of "Lucifer" than Alan Parsons this time.

Yana - Climb Up the Wall

Her real name was Pamela Guard (though it seems she always preferred to spell it Pamella). She was born in Billericay, Essex, in 1932. Yana was quite well-known in the period 1955-1960. She made numerous television appearances (and was known for her plunging necklines). In 1956, she had her own show on BBC tv, though it wasn't a great success. In the 1960s she faded into obscurity and in the 1980s was working in Boots the Chemists in Marylebone, London. She died in 1989.
This was her biggest selling record, although it didn't make the charts.

Driver 67 - Car 67

Car 67" is a pop song by "Driver 67" that appeared in the UK Singles Chart in December 1978. It was written by Paul Phillips and Pete Zorn and was sung by Phillips. The song is a ballad revolving around a cab driver who had split up with his girlfriend the previous day and how he is refusing to make a particular pick-up at 83 Royal Gardens (the passenger, unbeknownst to the controller, is the woman in question). The song is arranged as the taxi driver singing the lyrics, interspersed with the voice of the taxi controller. The taxi controller had a distinctive West Midlands accent in the original release, however the version usually appearing on compilation albums etc., features the taxi controller with a mid-Atlantic accent, a change of address to 83 Brook Terrace, with the taxi driver being called 'Ralph'.

It was in the UK Singles Chart for twelve weeks, reaching a high of Number 7 in February 1979.

Pete, I not only remember it, I bought the 45 at the time and still have it. Can't remember when it was last played, though.

Just listened to 'Two Out of Three Ain't Bad' by Meat Loaf. I love the whole Bat Out of Hell album. It's so theatrical and Meat Loaf has an incredible voice. I taped it in the 80s onto a cassette which had The Hollies on the other side. Quite an odd mixture but it was one of my favourite tapes!

Ah, I like that song too, Anita. It still got played on "classic hits" stations a lot while I was in my teens (and probably still does), but I seem to recall they all too often played an edited version that left out a large chunk of the last verse, which is the ironic twist of the song — we learn the narrator is leaving this girl because his heart is still broken over a previous lover who walked out on him with exactly the same words. Glad to see and hear you have the full version here!
