Mike & the Mechanics...The living years. Great lyrics, & a reminder to keep talking to the ones we hold dear.

Yes, a wonderful song, number 6. Chris de Burgh published a cover version of it, but in my opinion it doesn't do it really justice.
Mike and the Mechanics are not among my most favourite bands I listen to, but another great song is "Silent running" which unfortunately has a great revelance again in our days .

The Silkie - Blood Red River
https://www.dropshots.com/Domino43/date ... 3/12:00:52" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
The Silkie was formed while its members were at Hull University in 1963. The lead vocalist was Sylvia Tatler. The other members were Mike Ramsden, Ivor Aylesbury and Kevin Cunningham. They took their name from a mythical creature (in essence a wereseal) that features in an old Orcadian folk song, "The Great Silkie of Sule Skerry". In 1965 they were signed by Brian Epstein, although he did not manage them personally. 'Blood Red River' was their first release on the Fontana label. (The previous year they had recorded a flexi-disc for Hull University Rag Week, which included a version of this song.) They followed this up with a Beatles song, "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away", which was their only hit.
Tatler and Ramsden married in 1966. They performed as a duo for the next 35 years. Ramsey died in 2004.

A lovely folk song.
Silkies (or selkies, which is the spelling I've seen most often) are quite common in folk tales from Ireland, Scotland and Iceland. I haven't come across the term "wereseal" before though.

“Which way, which way does that blood red river run
From the back door to the rising sun.”
Beautiful metaphor for where shall we go tonight after we steal out of the back door in the red hot passion of love to cavort till the sunrise.
So innocent compared to today’s lyrics. Sheer poetry really.

Re: Last Song You Listened To
I've just been working on the latest lesson of the Cornish language course I'm doing, the current writing exercise being to write 5-10 sentences on "my house". Which has inevitably led to this being stuck in my head...
(That song always does remind me a little of our house back in Australia, as for many years while I was growing up, we did have "two cats in the yard" (and a dog!) — long passed away now, but never to be forgotten. )

Re: Last Song You Listened To
I have been trying to get the lyrics of this song. I have a file of song lyrics that I listen to on my Kindle. I collect song lyrics that I find beautiful. I tried searching online, but found three songs with the same name but different lyrics. One song had the same chorus more or less but everything else was different.Domino wrote:The Silkie - Blood Red River

If anyone cares to listen to the song again and fill in the words I couldn’t get, I would be grateful.

Every time I sang the song I left ? ? behind.

I sat down with my true love and I began to sing:

Re: Last Song You Listened To
I hear the lyrics of 'Blood Red River' like this but I'm not absolutely sure of them either:
"Once I heard a song. I sang it all the time."
"Every time I sang the song I left a man behind."
"I sat down one morning beside a garden spring."
I've been listening to Irving Berlin songs, including 'Wild About You' which is in the stage version of Top Hat. I love the strong singing and the daft exuberance of the lyrics, e.g.
"Wild about you,
The child about you
Makes me wild about you.
If I were a native of Borneo
I couldn't be wilder about you!
Mad about you,
The bad about you
Makes me mad about you.
If I were the Hatter in Wonderland
I couldn't be madder about you!"
Just brilliant!

Re: Last Song You Listened To
Thanks Anita. Yes, I do find some song lyrics to be as beautiful as the best poetry. Those that I associate with my father - like Frank Sinatra’s music - are particularly moving to me. I suppose because they depict to me an ideal perfect time. This one for example reminds me of the best Chinese poetry, simple in its beauty. Much slower tempo than Top Hat though.
Autumn Leaves,
Frank Sinatra.
The falling leaves drift by the window,
The autumn leaves of red and gold.
I see your lips, the summer kisses,
The sunburned hands I used to hold.
Since you went away the days grow long,
And soon I'll hear old winter's song.
But I miss you most of all my darling,
When autumn leaves start to fall.

Re: Last Song You Listened To
Very poignant. It reminds me of the beautiful song 'Forever Autumn' which Jeff Wayne used in his musical version of The War of the Worlds, although he had written it earlier:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yn3AJjuup3Q" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
I'm particularly touched by the following lyrics:
"Through autumn's golden gown we used to kick our way,
You always loved this time of year.
Those fallen leaves lie undisturbed now
'Cos you're not here...
'Cos you're not here...
'Cos you're not here..."
Also:
"Like the sun through the trees you came to love me,
Like a leaf on a breeze you blew away..."

Nice choice, Anita! Forever Autumn is a classic! I love the War of the Worlds album, too.
Neil Young.. Harvest Moon. Listened to this on the way back from training (Pub!!) last night. A soft & gentle song to chill out to. Think Eddie might appreciate this one.
