I was a tiny baby when Elvis died and only three when John Lennon was shot so I don't really remember either of them. Only recent celebs spring to mind, sorry! Besides, I keep thinking people are dead only to find they are still alive so I'm not much use!

My first celeb memory is of Charles and Diana getting married - I think I was about 4 and my mum let me watch it on the television.

I have the whole documentery of their wedding on video casette. My father had the pleasure to meet Princess Diana when she was on her tour to the Gulf states and he described her being one of the most pleasent people he had ever met.

Most interestingly, Diana covered her whole head and wore a long dress while she was on the tour, because of her respect for other religions. Personally, I am a great fan of hers.

I was watching the documentery on Diana's 10 anniversery and was touched by the comments made by Prince Harry and Charles. I am surprised that Charles or Queen Elizabeth didn't say anything much.

Anyways, I don't think why Diana had to marry Charles. She was much more beautiful than him and even younger. I always thought Charles looked like an old man even int he 80's!

All right - I have gone too far! No offence to the British Royal Family!

That sounds quite rude, Almas. I don't think Prince Charles will be very happy if he sees your comments! ...and yes Princess Diana really was very pretty.

I often wonder why visiting foreign women don't uncover their heads out of their respect for our traditional religion? Image

As far as I'm aware, Britain's traditional religion also demands that women cover their heads. Well, that's what St Paul said, according to the Bible anyway.

I do agree heartily with your sentiments, though, Nigel.

Like many of the earlier posters, it was the death of Elvis in 1977 for me too.

Was that really 40 years ago?! Groan! Where did all that time go? :-(
'Oh voice of Spring of Youth
hearts mad delight,
Sing on, sing on, and when the sun is gone
I'll warm me with your echoes
through the night.'

I'm sure there must have been many celebrity deaths in my lifetime before it, but the earliest one I can actually remember for sure is Princess Diana in 1997, when I was 15... I don't think I paid much attention to the news at a younger age.

It was a nuisance. An adventure was one thing - but an adventure without anything to eat was quite another thing. That wouldn't do at all. (The Valley of Adventure)

I think my strongest early one was King George, we were dancing to the Music & Movement Radio programme at school when the programme stopped and the announcer said "The King is Dead, Long Live the Queen". End of dancing, and our parents were sent for to take us home. It felt very sombre!

After John Lennon, I also remember the deaths of Anwar Sadat and Grace Kelly being mentioned on the news, but I had never heard of either of them either. I think the first death of a celebrity I'd actually heard of was Dick Emery in early 1983.

For me, it was probably Tommy Handley in 1949. I remember we used to listen to ITMA at Saturday lunch times (a repeat of the show broadcast in the evenings during the week).
He called the greatest archers to a tavern on the green.
