So glad you had a fab time in Norway, floragord! I like the sound of the shimmering waterfalls & the snow capped mountains. In fact, I'd love to visit all the places you've described!

Glad you had such a wonderful holiday in Norway, Floragord. I love the Flam railway, the fjords and the waterfalls - and I too went to several boat museums.

Re: Your favourite holiday location.
Many thanks, all, for your nice comments on our visit to Norway -a happy memory now, feels ages ago as we've been 'doing' Classical Rome from cover to cover! We were fortunate in having plenty of time to do the sites, in hot sunshine, concentrating on the Colisseum, Roman Forum - I had a happy picnic sitting on a chunk of marble at the Temple of Vesta reading Helen MacInnes' NORTH FROM ROME! - Imperial Forum, Palatine Hill, Circus Maximus and out to the astonishing Catacombs on the Via Appia - I'd read about "catacomb chill" and now fully understand it, they're icy! We stayed out at Ostia, the port for ancient Rome, with its own astonishing archaelogical excavations, and a handy local train station to get into the centre of Rome - it was distinctly memorable to step out of the Metro station opposite the massive Colosseum. More cheerful travel memories for 2017!

Sounds brilliant, Floragord! I went to Rome as part of an Inter-rail trip in 1989 and found the catacombs fascinating.

Chick and I loved Rome. It is such an unbelievably fantastic place to visit. Whichever corner you turn, there is something to see which takes your breath away.

Sounds a bit like Birmingham - except your breath is taken away by bus fumes, cannabis smoke and at the moment piles of uncollected rubbish!

An extremely amusing response, which made me laugh out loud, Rob.

It would be funnier if it wasn't true, lol!

Re: Your favourite holiday location.
If what you say is true, that’s really sad. I haven’t been into Birmingham for a few years, but I’ve always had rather a soft spot for the city.

Great stuff, Eddie! Glad you both enjoyed it! Did you get the chance to visit the coliseum?Eddie Muir wrote:Chick and I loved Rome. It is such an unbelievably fantastic place to visit. Whichever corner you turn, there is something to see which takes your breath away.

Re: Your favourite holiday location.
We did indeed, Number 6. It was in August 2004 (how time flies!) and we visited all the major tourist attractions, including the Pantheon, the Spanish Steps, the Trevi Fountain, the Forum, the Coliseum, the Vatican City, the Sistine Chapel and the Church of St Peter. It was a most memorable holiday.
Have you been to Rome, Number 6?

Re: Your favourite holiday location.
I visited all those places with my friend Vanessa, Eddie. We found the people of Rome to be very kind. When our train was late arriving in Rome and the hostel we'd hoped to check into was full, a lady who overheard us talking offered to take us to another hostel on the outskirts of town. It was late afternoon rush-hour and it took her an hour to get us there (with her young child in the car) but she wouldn't take any payment. On leaving Rome a few days later, we were standing near the Spanish Steps in the rain as we had an hour or two to kill before getting the Metro to Termini Station and had run out of Italian money. If I remember correctly we were taking the overnight train to Brindisi where we'd be catching a ferry to Greece, so we didn't want to change any more travellers' cheques (our journey was paid for and we had enough food on us to last for the next couple of days). Two young men got talking to us, took us to a café, bought us ice-creams/drinks, travelled with us on the Metro and waved us off on the train. We were sorry to leave!

Re: Your favourite holiday location.
Your experience of Rome sounds great, Anita. I can well imagine that you and Vanessa were sorry to leave. Chick and I hope to return to the great city sometime in the not-too-distant future.
