Guidelines
A few house rules
a) Try to keep posts and topics relevant to the forum in which they are posted. Moderators may move or split a topic that has veered off course.
b) Members should remember this board is aimed at a general audience. Posting pornographic or generally offensive text, images, links, etc., will not be tolerated. This also applies to avatars.
c) Members should post in a way that is respectful of other users. Flaming or abusing users in any way will not be tolerated.
d) Please do try to use reasonably good spelling, punctuation and grammar, and avoid netspeak, which is annoying.
e) Spam will not be not tolerated here under any circumstances.
f) Please let us do the moderating. If you are unhappy with a post, then e-mail the moderators and we will determine what action is necessary. Do not try to argue back on the board, because it invariably makes the situation worse.
g) The moderators reserve the right to edit or remove any post as they see fit. The determination of what is construed as indecent, vulgar, spam, etc., is up to the moderators and not users.
h) The above forum rules where applicable also apply to private messaging and e-mail. If someone has sent you an abusive e-mail or private message, please inform the moderators and we will take action.
i) Please don't quote at length from previous posters unless absolutely necessary, and avoid quoting the post immediately before yours as it takes up space needlessly.
Any violation of these rules will lead to a warning or a total ban, as we see fit.

These are good house rules we all benefit by accepting and applying-when things go awry its usually because these rules have been overlooked!Matthew Roberts wrote:A few house rules

I think I'm probably guilty of breaking rule 'a' several times over. Hopefully I haven't broken any others.

I don't mind people exchanging differences of opinions, as long as it doesn't get vicious or personal. Although of course, obviously I am ALWAYS right.

Re: Guidelines
I was looking over another forum a few weeks ago, and their rules were quite prominent on the index page, at the top and perminently there for all to see. I didn't even know we had any rules. I wonder if I've broken any!!
Julian gave an exclamation and nudged George.

And I missed out on all the fun!
Oh by the way, Tony, I read your remark on another thread on the peculiar punctuation that some Indian posters use: "Something that has always fascinated me, is why so many people who have been educated in India put punctuation marks in the wrong place. They should come immediately after a word followed by a gap before the next word - xxx, xxx but more often than not the gap comes before the punctuation mark - xxx ,xxx... My question is, is this the way you are taught to do it in Indian schools?"
The answer is no! I grew up in India, and Indians who learn English in school (and that is a relatively small percentage of the total population), are taught correctly all right; but it is up to the learner to employ that learning and use the language correctly. By the way I have had to exercise great restraint and not point out their lousy punctuation to the person you are referring to. My feeling is that any comment from me will likely lead to a petulant outburst, for which I have neither the time nor indeed the stamina...
I will second that!Fiona1986 wrote:Guideline D needs to be enforced!

Yes. me too! I also noticed that the mis-punctuation was intermittent, as well. That seems to me to show a lack of care. However, as Tony said, the majority of posts from people from the Indian subcontinent seem to share this habit. There is also someone who never uses capitals for names of countries, but does for other proper nouns. I can't remember who it is, by why should this be?70s-child wrote: By the way I have had to exercise great restraint and not point out their lousy punctuation to the person you are referring to. Re: Guidelines
I think a lot of people who post from the sub-continent aren't comfortable with English, which would explain the inconsistent capitalization, poor punctuation, and all the rest. Some are also probably the first in their families to learn the language, and so don't have the benefit of being able to use it at home. It is very likely that some of the posters just muddle their way through the language when they post on the forums, without really knowing what is right and what isn't! But I agree this can be pretty jarring, and I would certainly appreciate an attempt to be careful while writing.Moonraker wrote: Yes. me too!
