I thought it was named after the monty python too, and then people made up things it could stand for (eg Short Pointless Anoying Messages, Silly People Anoying Me, and as moonraker said Senseless People Annoying Millions)

Spammers are really so anoying. Thanks keith and Tony for all your efforts in removing them.

I too am sure it comes from the Python sketch.
