u n small caretaker's house stood nearby, along a path which, through the vast garden of the property, leading to a large house probably one of the masters Popett lived in ordinary times. No smokestacks came out of the high chimneys, which was normal as "Tom" Auntie "and" Gloria "were absent. On the other hand, a thick black column rose above the cottage of the keeper, which the children imagined very well, wrapped up, near his stove.
Popett, however, wanted to play with Foxy. She walked away from the gate, leapt back, running back, and then went back, looking behind her as if to say,
"Come on! We will do a good deal together.
Foxy would not have asked better than to respond to the prompt. He scratched at the barrier, moaning. Fatty said,
"No, no, Foxy! You have already caused us enough trouble with Father Groddy without complicating matters. We better get out of here! "
The children were about to turn around when a voice came from their cottage:
" Popett! Hey, Popett! Where are you? Come here now! "
Popett immediately disappeared under a bush. Hiding as well as she could, she waited without moving. The children watched his amusement, amused.
"Where the devil is this dog?" Said the voice.
There was a trampling sound of footsteps and Bob Larkin appeared....

Re: Find-Outers Illustrators Comparisons
I love the second cover where they're hiding behind the tree. Is that a book cover or a record cover? Though its cartoony, I'm a fan of that sort of style, and its dramatic and quite adult. Love the colours and the man running away!

Re: Find-Outers Illustrators Comparisons
Looking at the bottom picture in Pete's World Tour reminds me that I do like some of the French internal colour illustrations and it would be really nice to get some into the Cave. I have numerous illustrations of foreign editions on my computer which nobody ever sees and I feel that perhaps I should be less idle and do something about it.
You could also have fun trying to guess what some of the books are, as some are far from obvious even when both the language and the series are. Easy to cheat, but how about this one!

Re: Find-Outers Illustrators Comparisons
Just catching up with this thread. It's interesting to see all the different representations of the characters and events.
Yes, it's extremely eye-catching and dramatic. I don't much like the cover to the left of that one though. It looks bland and wishy-washy with its grey background, plain-looking timbered cottage/workhouse and pinky-orange flames.Rob Houghton wrote:I love the second cover where they're hiding behind the tree. You're anything but idle, Tony - in fact you're something of an idol! - but it would be lovely to see more illustrations from foreign editions. I'm very fond of the more romantic-looking French illustrations like the bottom picture in Pete's last post. Beautiful and atmospheric.Tony Summerfield wrote:Looking at the bottom picture in Pete's World Tour reminds me that I do like some of the French internal colour illustrations and it would be really nice to get some into the Cave. I see from the Cave that it's Good Old Secret Seven, the 12th book of the series. I can't remember whether the girls play a big part but maybe it's one of those books in which they're left out of the adventurous happenings!Fiona1986 wrote:Ah yes, the Formidable Boys of the Secret Seven! It was used as cover of a record and an audio cassette, Rob. It reminds me that I own 6 cassettes or records of the series. I know though that there are more available, but the prices are usually beyond my budget if I happen to come across one.Rob Houghton wrote:I love the second cover where they're hiding behind the tree. Thanks Wolfgang - really like the style of it. I thought it looked too 'flat' for a book.

Strange Bundle illustration comparisons
Treyer Evans & Dylan Roberts
Jenny Chapple & Rodney Sutton
Another scene from the same book:
Treyer Evans & Rodney Sutton
Jenny Chapple
And finally - many years before he appeared on the big screen Jenny Chapple makes Goon look like Darth Vader!
Surely even Jenny's firmest knockers would be impressed with this comparison.

Re: Find-Outers Illustrators Comparisons
Dylan Roberts really has copied the original illustration very closely, hasn't he!
While Bets now looks like a 1970s glamour girl - at least sixteen! thanks to Rodney Sutton.

Treyer Evans for me as well - though I also like the Rodney Sutton illustrations as they're bold and full of action/emotion.

Treyer Evans for me. I tend to favour the hardback illustrators as I grew up with them.

Re: Find-Outers Illustrators Comparisons
I think it is entirely understandable that we like best the illustrations we first meet. We identify with them and it takes quite a shift of mind, to feel that (in my case) later illustrations are in any way a true representation of the characters. In the case of the Find-Outers, however, that is a bit different, but perhaps fortunately for me, I didn't take too much notice of the illustrations as a child. I'm not sure that I even noticed the difference between them back then! Of course we didn't have the opportunity to read a complete series in succession when they were first published, so the impact would be negligible I think.
