I enjoyed Terry's review of The Enid Blyton Pennant Series number 23:

I've never read 'Lucy Lively and Dicky Dull' but it's the sort of story I'd have liked as a child - and I love the note (presumably meant for teachers who were using the stories in the classroom) advising "indirect instruction" on ethics!

I have 'The Magic Mirror' in an Award book (The Magic Mirror and Other Stories) and it's a slightly creepy and thought-provoking tale along the same lines as 'Sulky Susan', which was a favourite of mine when I was little.

I've just read Terry's review of Tales of the Toys (Enid Blyton's Little Book No. 5). Lively accounts of the stories which avoid giving too much away. 'The Land of Wooden Horses' sounds particularly intriguing. Thanks, Terry!

For short story enthusiasts I have now got my copy of Springtime Stories so I have loaded the contents in the Cave. I have also put the preliminary details of the three other short story books being published this year. I do know the provisional contents for these next three books as well, but I won't add them until nearer the date of their publication as sometimes late changes are made.

Please note that a story that has appeared as 'The Strange Little Needles' has now reverted to its original title in this book, 'The Queer Little Needles'.

I got 'Christmas Treats' for Christmas this year and am really enjoying it. For a modern design, I actually quite like the cover and am planning to get the others in the series, at least the short stories. Not so keen on the Cherry Tree Farm etc. covers, and I already have all those books anyway in Dean versions, so might not bother with those ones.

Thanks Tony! I will hopefully be buying the Springtime Stories when Spring is on its way! In fact, it would be the perfect present to ask my dad to get me for Easter - as I don't eat chocolate, so usually have nothing!

Interesting about 'The Queer Little Needles' - good to hear the proper title has been reinstated. Of course, 'queer' as a slang term is probably (thankfully) more and more obsolete these days, so wouldn't have the same connotations to most children as it might have had in the past.

It's great to see these, Tony! The Winter Stories cover looks particularly nice, though my favourite title is Stories of Magic and Mischief. I'd certainly have wanted to read that as a youngster. Good news about 'The Queer Little Needles'!

I really quite like the covers for this series — they're so bright and colourful and fun, and while they're not what most of us would call "traditional", they don't look nearly as dumbed-down to me as, say, the latest incarnation of the Famous Five. Plenty of children's books when I was little had illustrations like that (Mark Beech's style is very similar to Quentin Blake's) and I certainly enjoyed them. It's the content that matters most of all, and I'm delighted that so many of Enid's short stories are in print again for yet another new generation. And yes, good news about "The Queer Little Needles", I agree!

I agree Courtenay - for this type of book, the cover illustrations are great, and suit the style and magic of many of the stories. I have two Christmas compilations and the Wizard and Witch compilation and I love them. :-)

I like all of the new covers for this series but agree with Anita that the Wintertime one and Magic and Mischief look very tempting! I would also have loved a book called Magic and Mischief when I was young - and even better if there had been plenty of stories about mischievous children getting their comeuppance! :D

I was surprised to see a story written in 1838 though!   I knew Enid had been popular for a long time, but maybe not quite for 180 years... ;-)

I am not sure where this is supposed to be as it is not in Springtime Stories.

I really like this whole series of books and stories. Although I never buy modern books I am going to collect this lot.
They give access to a range of stories otherwise difficult to get hold of.

The story selection and series concept is superb.

I agree - they are great anthologies and often have previously unpublished stories. I love the fact they are collecting similar stories together, which gives the collections extra depth, rather than just being random short stories. Great concept, as you say. :-D

Yes,that's exactly how I feel as a collector Rob. Much as I would like to track down and buy every copy of Sunny Stories, I don't think that option is realistically possible financially!! :D
